Introduction
  • Chinese white dolphins/pink dolphins are a
cetacean species living in Hong Kong and southern
China waters. They are pale white, nearly pink in
colours, and enjoy swimming in estuaries (river
mouth) among the islands of Hong Kong. One of the
dolphins primary homes today is found in the
waters north of Lantau Island, and around the
smaller islands of Lung Kwu Chau(???) and Sha
    Chau(??).

External features of the dolphin

External features of the dolphin
  • Body Shape Chinese white dolphins have no
hair on their bodies. This helps to reduce the
resistance resulting from their quick movements
in the water. Their streamlined body shape also
helps the dolphins to move easily in waters.
Chinese white dolphins have no external ears or
    necks.

Threats on Dolphins
  • Loss of habitat This is often caused by land
reclamation, for example, the West Kowloon
    Reclamation, Central Reclamation, etc., and
dredging(removing mud from the river/sea bed).
Both can destroy the dolphins' habitat.
  • Reduction in food supplies This can be the
result of overfishing, destruction of fish
    nursery.

7
Threats on Dolphins
  • Marine Traffic Boat engines and other noises
in the sea can affect dolphin's ability to
communicate and hunt. Remember dolphins travel by
means of echolocation. Therefore, it is not
uncommon to find dolphins bump into boats and
    other traffic at sea.

8
Threats on Dolphins
  • Pollution Toxic materials e.g. DDT, PCB,
mercury, and other chemical waste from factories,
and bacteria and viruses in untreated sewage
sometimes flow into the sea and kill a lot of
    marine life.
  • Oil spill Sea animals can also be killed
by oil spill in the sea. The oil can damage the
    lung tissues of the animals.

9
Threats on Dolphins
  • Fishing Although many fishermen would not
intentionally catch or kill dolphins, many
dolphins are accidentally trapped in fishing nets
and are choked to death or drowned.

10
1.Protect their habitats
  • Giving them places free from marine traffic where
they can rest, nurse the young, and find food
  • For example, Lung Kwo Chau, and Sha Chau have
been marked as marine parks for dolphins

11
2. Provide adequate food supply
  • Not allowing dredging in prawn and fish spawning
    ground
  • Not fishing in areas where dolphins will look for
    food
  • Protecting young fishes and prawn as they are the
    basic food of the dolphins

12
3. Keep marine traffic out of areas where
dolphins are usually found
  • Stop ships from coming into the marine parks
  • Set and enforce speed limits in the "dolphin
    areas
  • Make sure that ships and boats do not make a lot
    of noise

13
4.Keep our ocean clean
  • Treat the sewage properly before it flows into
    the sea
  • Stop using DDT, PCB, detergents and make sure
they do not flow into the sea.
  • Do not dump contaminated sludge in the sea. Treat
    it on land first

14
5. Revise fishing practices
  • No trawling in coastal waters

15
6.Public Education
  • Reduce waste (rubbish) production
  • Recycle waste products
  • Throw plastic products away properly (as they may
be carried to the sea by strong winds which will
then be harmful to the dolphins)
  • Inform the public that it is illegal to harm,
possess or trade Chinese White Dolphins
