Title: What is Chiropractic

1
What is Chiropractic?
2
  • Everyone deserves to be healthy!

Chiropractors adjust subluxations (joint and
nerve dysfunction) in order to free the bodys
innate intelligence to restore and maximise
health.
3
  • Adj. since birth, excep. health, non-prac.
chiropractor, married to a chiropractor, mother
    of 3
  • Have spent the last 5 years collating health
literature. Reason WAB - I did not feel there
was enough easy-to-read research or information
for parents regarding the health decisions we
make during pregnancy and early childhood.
  • 4 Very Different Births
  • Our Birth Stories
  • - 1st - Birth Centre
  • postr head ext. failed to progress past 6cms
Artif. Rupture, moved to hospital result an
assisted birth, drip, epid. syntoc threatened CS
    (35 hrs a dislocated pubis)
  • 2nd - Home birth (straight forward 14 hrs)
  • 3rd - Medically induced hospital birth - still
    birth
  • 4th - Home birth (2 1/2 hrs)
  • Also participated in a home-birth and caesarean
    birth
  • I truly believe Children are born exactly the way
they are meant to be born. Some babies like to
make a dramatic entrance into the world, others -
    peaceful .

4
Birth Historically. The CULTURE around
birthing has changed dramatically over time.
  • Historically birthing has been very different to
what we see today. We no longer live in tribal
based cultures where young women witness
    support other women during birthing.
  • Women would use their intuition on how to labour
    naturally. They would birth actively.
  • Women trusted the capacity of their bodies to
    birth their babies
  • Even with so many medicalised Western births over
all Global statistics tell us that 95 of all
    births are uncomplicated
  • We lack the opportunity to observe natural
labour. We seem to have a blind misunderstanding
of what birth can really be about.
  • Today - sensationalism and hype of media with
visuals of women lying on their back moaning
wailing often pleading for their doctors to do
    something.
  • With todays culture what often see people hand
over their health or their birth to medicine.
Inherently wanting someone else to take
    responsibility or control.

5
Knowledge is key!
  • I do not advocate one particular style of
birthing and couples need to honour their own
    individual needs
  • However as a society we have had a tendency over
    the last few generations
  • to make fear based decisions
  • regarding health issues
  • rather than empowering ourselves with knowledge
  • to make CONFIDENT RATIONAL choices
  • about how we want to birth
  • or raise our children.

6
What Choices do you have?
  • It is my every wish that whatever Birth Choice or
Health Choice a couple make - they are 100
    confident with their decision
  • This requires investigation research
  • Sadly 1 in 5 Aust. Women suffer post natal
depression after birth which has been linked to
women not playing an active role in the decision
    making process of their birth.
  • Birth choices should not be made blindly nor be
based solely on expert opinion WITHOUT INDIVIDUAL
    INVESTIGATION SCRUTINY.
  • Births are unpredictable that is why it is
vitally important that you consider all of your
options and appreciate the array of outcomes that
    may unfold.

7
The Birthing Buffet!
  • Your Options
  • Hospital - Elective C Section
  • Hospital - Emergency C Section
  • Hospital - Assisted Birth
  • Birth Centre - Natural or with minimal assistance
  • Home Birth - Natural
  • All births - even vaginal involve an element of
risk. So what are the Pros Cons of each??

8
The Pro and Cons of each type of birthing are
discussed here in full detail. Slides have been
removed.
9
What do you really want?
10
Preparing for Birth
  • Mentally It is imp. Mothers partners read
prepare. Learn about the different stages of
    labour, understand appreciate pain, watch
    birthing videos, proactive birthing workshops,
hypno-birthing etc. Write their birth plan.
  • Emotionally - letting go of fears, discuss
anxieties, kinesiology may be a useful tool. Be
open to all the avenues your birth may take, try
not to be stuck on just one outcome. Births are
unpredictable. Having a coach a PM or a doula can
    be your secret weapon.
  • Physically Women who focus on strengthening
their health are much more likely to have
    straightforward births, recover more quickly,
juggle first few months more easily.
  • So many vital steps.
  • Diet do donts ( Vit K imp. blood
    clotting preventing haemorrhage., Zinc Silica
prevent stretch marks, perineal tears cracked
    nipples),
  • Benefits of physical exercise during
    pregnancy, perineal massage, strengthening the
    pelvic floor, Chinese Medicine, Naturopathic
Herbs and Chiropractic all help prepare your
    body for labour,
  • ALL of these CAN AFFECT your LABOUR OUTCOMES

11
Chiropractic Pregnancy
  • Helps mothers combat many of the discomforts of
pregnancy eg LBpain, sciatica, heart burn etc
  • Chirop. care ensures that the pelvis sits
correctly allowing for optimum room for the baby
to grow and move. Constraint may lead to
    developmental problems and autism
  • Correct alignment of the pelvis allows the baby
to apply even pressure on the cervix promoting
    dilation
  • Research shows Chiropractic care helps labours to
be more straight forward, reduces labour time, w.
    less pain trauma.
  • 50 less need for pain relief

12
Use pregnancy as a time to gather health
information
  • Birth Trauma
  • Breast Feeding
  • Vaccination
  • First Foods
  • Antibiotics

13
Chiropractic is SAFE GENTLEfor all ages
14
Checking Children.
15
Knowledge is power!
  • When you prepare WELL for any event
  • no matter what happens,
  • no matter what outcome arises,
  • you will be more informed to make
  • choices that feel congruent for you and your
    family.

16
A Good Birth
  • Any woman who gives her pregnancy birth every
bit of focus that she can (no matter what outcome
unfolds) should be acknowledged like a
    superhero revered as a goddess

17
Trust in your body
  • We are often socialised into controlling events,
    scheduling and rushing through life
  • If we take the time to become still in our bodies
Birthing allows us to address our greatest fears
    find our greatest strengths
  • As we embark on another pregnancy and birth -I
reflect on the moment in time during labour where
you surrender to your body, surrender to the
    divine and immerse yourself physically
spiritually into labour. (Not with the 1st but
    with the next 3 births)
  • At a cellular level our bodies know how to birth
    our babies.
  • Take the time regularly to Honour your bodys
intelligence and the life-force growing within
    you
  • Remember that birthing (regardless of the stlye)
with the right preparation, can be Journey Self
    Discovery Self-Accomplishment
