Title: Impact of industrialisation
1Impact of industrialisation mining on Water,
Agriculture, Fishery and Human - an Ecological
Debt debate
2- Study Conducted by Civil Society Partners
- ProcessReconnaissance visit for a fix of study
location and sampling. - Prime Focus on Agriculture, Water and Aquatic
life, human and livelihood issues.
3Fisheries scenario
- Out of 41 species mentioned by community only 29
are sparsely available - During over hauling process gill chock and
depletion of oxygen - The concentration of lead (Pb) (gt 0.01mg/l)
- Lead concentration will affect the reproductive
capacity of fish
4Fish life
- Hilsa (economic Important species) is very
sensitive to pollution - Though Cd is within permissible limit (lt0.01mg/L)
but bio magnification of same in the aquatic
environment?????????? Unable to prove - needs
expensive tests - Genetic mutation in human being
- Shifted from inland fishing to non fishery
related activities
5Drinking water scenario
Fluoride Contamination Water sample tested in
field varies in fluoride contamination from 1.5
mg/l to 5.0 mg/l Permissible limit
(1.0mg/l)? Problem due to fluoride
contamination Weakening of digestive
system Dental and skeletal fluorsis
6Agriculture scenario
- Most of the traditional variety seeds are lost.
- Input cost has increased due to loss of soil
nutrients - Cd will affect the seed germination
- Number of heads in paddy plant has reduced by 30
- Pb in soil will reduce the root to shoot growth
and improper germination of seed
7- Temperature in peak summer rises more than 500 c.
( water requirement is more)? - Rise in temp will affect the soil moisture,
growth and fertility, pest attack, - Weed intensity/ diversity - especially growth in
shrubs - No lining in the ash pond
- toxicants from ash pond affect the soil profile
- also affect the ground water aquifer in regional
scale. - Fly ash deposit on plants closes the stomata pores
8- Wind based deflation of fly ash
- No vegetative growth or compensatory
afforestation - Radiation effect
- Vegetative cover can be seen clearly from google
earth picture of Anugul area (clear white patch
)? - Respiratory diseases
- Use of Electro Static Precipitator (ESP) ????
9Compensation
- Compensation for ground water pollution
- Compensation of pollution to soil quality
- Compensation to disease out break - human
- Compensation for livelihood loss - human
- Compensation to entire loss of natural resources
- When? How? And Who?
Industralisation at the expense of making the
poor and the poorest and the rich the richest?
