1TRESTEBlackfeet Community CollegeThird year
plan 2007-08
2Plan for year three
- Learn to use GPS
- Create Maps
- Include things like satellite, aerocam,
surface temperature into the maps
3Plan for year three
- Continue to GPS cultural sites
- Use GPS for water quality sampling sites
- Incorporate remote sensing into curriculum
- Teaching Boxes
4Nitawahsin-nanni Geography Project
5Intro to GPS Training
- Offered March 10 -12, 2008
- 14 Participants BCC faculty staff
- This professional development training was
offered for individuals who are involved in the
STEM areas field related instruction.
6Geographical Information Systems / Global
Positioning System
Vo-Ed One (1) Year
Certificate The One-year Geographical Information
Systems (GIS) / Global Positioning System (GPS)
program is designed to provide students with the
comprehensive background, skills and application
to make their transition into the workforce or to
pursue further studies in these fields. In
addition, this program will provide students with
the necessary practical application of each of
these fields to enter directly into the workforce
or create business opportunities for private
enterprise. This curriculum is designed to
provide the technologies to identify and
digitally preserve the sacred or culturally
sensitive locations throughout the Blackfeet
Reservation. GIS/GPS Course Requirements Descripti

7Plan for year three
- Get more students involved with GIS/GPS
- Have more faculty involvement
8Water Quality Soil Plant Nutrient Test Lab
- Lab is in the process of being completed to be
used for surface water testing. - The water lab is being used across the
curriculum. - Eventually will need to be state certified
- Blackfeet EPA will send us their samples to be
tested - Ranchers farmers in Glacier County
surrounding counties will be able to send water
time sensitive tests. Required by NRCS FSA
9Water Quality Soil Plant Nutrient Test Lab
- Eventually will need to be state
certified-continued - Ranchers farmers will be able to send in soil
water samples. Some are time sensitive and have
to send them to Bozeman. Important to have a lab
close by. - Well water tested found several area wells to
be positive for contaminates. Positive Coliform
Tests - Challenges Need training in plant nutrient
testing.
10Large River Eco-systems
- This began last month is a 5 year program.
- Create baseline data for Global warming on two
major rivers on the reservation. - Checking the health of these two eco-systems
- Test at the source, middle where they flow into
the Marias. - Students will GPS these sites
- Interns for the Piita Grant will be doing the
studies on these two rivers. - Students will be generating GIS maps of these
sites.
11Science as Inquiry
Develop an awareness that observations and
understandings of nature and ecological
relationships traditionally formed an essential
base of knowledge among American Indian cultures.
12Inquiry Based Education
- All of the Science courses and new text books
inquiry based applications - All the courses start with Case Studies. Students
were enthused about the case studies used in the
course curriculum. - Culturally Related Activities or information is
integrated into our lessons.
13Teaching Boxes
- Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology,
Microbiology, Water Resources, Wildlife, Soils,
Forestry - Development of multiple disciplinary teaching
boxes - Binders of resources needed or available for the
instructor. - Equipment or instruments needed for lessons
- Tribal knowledge or culturally relevant materials
will be included.
