6
Limited field of view
The field of view is limited on the right for the
right eye and on the left for the left eye. This
limitation is determined by the ratio of the
width to depth of the stair step pattern.
Line of sight
7
Limited field of view
The limitation can also be reduced by changing
the angle of the bevel relative to the line of
sight.
8
Focal length correction
If focal length corrections are required, the
lens may be divided into two plastic pieces which
are later glued, fused or welded together.
Concave or convex surfaces on either or both
pieces and the air gap serve as a lens to make
the necessary corrections within the rod lens
rather than requiring a bulky external lens.
9
Optional components
Video camera lens (would be placed above eyepiece
arm)
LCD Shutter to switch between VR and AR mode
Proposed location
10
Optional video camera design
  • Uses for optional video camera(s)
  • Motion detection to automatically
  • disable VR mode
  • Video recording
  • Head tracking
  • Object recognition for augmented
  • reality

Focus
Collimation
The use of a rod lens moves the image sensor
farther back thus reducing bulk near the eyepiece.
Rectangular rod lens
CCD or CMOS image sensor

Thoughts for future options and enhancements.
  • Integrated accelerometers
  • Improved peripheral vision
  • Integrated eye trackers
  • Increased resolution
  • Possible dual-chip design. One chip for
peripheral and one for high-resolution fovea
    (located with eye trackers).
  • Dual depth of field with dynamic focus
  • Integrated earphone jack and microphone
  • Wireless
