What Is Soil ?

• Soil is the solid material on the earths
  surface.
• It is a mixture of particles of weathered rock,
  water, gas and decayed organic matter.

Landscape Study

• The location of the area was Knockquaharn Farm,
  Dunecht.
• Geology Area covered in boulder clay (Till)
• Moraine Drift Material at the end of ice age.
• Underlying Geology Metamorphic schists and
  granitic formed from Granite.
• Relief Slopping Land
• Vegetation Kettlehole lochs surrounded by
  wetland area, flat land, woodland, coniferous,
  flat land, Loch of Skene.
• The farm is situated at the foot of the slope.

Soil Profile Studied

• Ao - A layer Poorly drained Horizon
• B layer Water Logged Gley horizon
• C layer Parent Material.

Formation Of Soils

• Gley soils Are Intrazonal Soils and are found in
  sites which are waterlogged, either permanently
  or temporarily. Iron compounds are reduced from
  their normal red-brown colour to a mottled
  blue-grey appearance.
• Podsolisation This involves pronounced leaching
  of material (iron,aluminium, and humus compunds)
  from the surface layers to the lower layers.

• Weathering This is the breakdown and
  decomposition of rocks by factors including air,
  water, sun and frost.
• Organic Matter Incorporation The breakdown or
  decomposition of plant remains leading to the
  formification of different types of humus.
• Leaching Is wherever rainfall exceeeds
  evaporation and there is free downward movement
  of water.
