1
Neo-Classicism or Enlightenment (1750-1820)
  • Heres a question for you..
  • What do you do when your bedroom becomes so
cluttered that you cant stand it any more?
  • People at the end of the Baroque period were
tired of the clutteredness that had filled their
    lifestyle.
  • They longed for a simpler, ordered, more refined
    way of life and society.

2
  • Also known as the Age of Enlightenment
  • There was a revolt against the excessiveness of
the Baroque era. People wanted a more refined,
classic feel (a return to classic Greek
    thought), ordered, balanced, symmetrical.
  • There was an acknowledgement that the conditions
of life could only improve with time and that
each generation made life even better for those
    following PROGRESS!
  • Enlightenment, reason, and progress are secular
ideas and the age became increasingly secular.
  • More and more, people were pulling away from the
    Church. Toleration increased and corporal
punishment for any offense became less common.

3
  • Advances in science continued physics,
    astronomy, mathematics, mineralogy, botany,
    zoology, classification of fossils, rocks,
minerals, plants, knowledge of oxygen and
    hydrogen
  • Telescopes, microscopes, barometer, thermometer,
air pump were all developed during this time
    period.
  • This led to better to advances in medical tools.

4
  • Better tools led to better construction leading
to better roads leading to better
  • Can you see why this period is called the Age of
    Enlightenment?

5
Enlightenment Thought
  • People became concerned with more than just
invention. They wanted to help all of humanity
    HUMANITARIANISM helping out the outcast,
    downtrodden, homeless
  • This kind of thought led to a belief that all men
and women had a right to dignity and happiness
and they questioned political, judicial and
    economic policies.
