Why Famous
  • Explored the bays and named the shores of St.
    Lawrence
  • One of the early Explorers of Canada
  • Became the first European to penetrate the St.
    Lawrence river

First Voyage
  • King sent him on an expedition in search of gold,
    spices, northwest passage to Asia
  • Met mimic Indians, traded and celebrated with
    them
  • After exploring on his first voyage, was
    disappointed he couldnt find the route to Asia

Second Voyage
  • Went on a second voyage because first voyage
    failed
  • Used two mimic Indians as guides to plot him to
    the St. Lawrence to Stadacona
  • Most of his men died from scurvy because of the
    bad weather and they didnt have any fresh fruits
    and vegetables

Third Voyage
  • Brought back what he thought was gold
  • Actually was Iron pyrite and quarts (fools gold)
  • Government checked it, found it was worthless
  • Went back to trading and sailing
  • Made the fort in the mouth of Saguenay River
  • Spent winter in Stadacona, at least 35 of his men
    were murdered by the Iroquois

  • Saguenay river was first visited by him
  • Heard word Kanata from the mimic Indians which
    meant village, but he thought it meant country so
    thats what he named Canada

  • Learned he explored Canada, and the St. Lawrence
    river
  • Died September 1, 1557 St.Malo, Brittany
