Theories of leadership
  • nature v nuture
  • Are leaders born or do they develop through the
    process of socialization
  • 2 contrasting theories Carlyle social
    learning theory

Great man theory Carlyle
  • Leaders inherit specific personality traits
  • These include intelligence, self-confidence,
    assertion, good looks and a dominating
    personality
  • This theory is only applied to men
  • This is a theory irrespective of any situation
  • This trait theory has little credence
    (acceptability)
  • Other factors are viewed as more relevant e.g.
    how the leader emerged, the situation and nature
    of the group.

Social learning theory
  • All behaviour patterns are learnt due to social
    influences
  • We copy behaviour of role models or significant
    others
  • It is vicarious experience
  • Criticism is that no allowance is made for trait
    approach and natural personality characteristics
