Title: or, put another way,

1
  • or, put another way,
  • How can the RP Programme help HEIs to exploit
    what has been learned?
  • Professor Jeff Haywood
  • Vice Principal Knowledge Management, Chief
Information Officer Librarian to the University
  • jeff.haywood_at_ed.ac.uk
  • http//homepages.ed.ac.uk/jhaywood

2
  • Some questions I get asked
  • What are we going to do about all our research
data that is getting lost or cannot be recovered?
  • Will we be first in our (region/group..) to get
    our publications repository deposit mandate?
  • Whose owns these teaching materials? Where
    should we store our copies?
  • Weve got a channel in iTunesU but where/how do
    we upload files?
  • Are we able to move away from hardcopy PhD
    theses?
  • Who pays for funder-mandated open access
    publishing?

PRIORITIES??
3
Technology adding value to the HEI in terms of
its strategic goals
  • Why bother with repositories?
  • default position is nul do nothing esp if s
    are low
  • so we will not take action unless we can see how
    they help our HEI to
  • increase productivity individually or
    collaboratively
  • enhance reputation / recognition
  • improve quality
  • increase income
  • lower costs
  • action can be at HEI-wide level, at unit level or
    at individual level

4
  • Some questions
  • So I need clarity / advice / support from you
on answering these sorts of questions

5
How should we categorise our stuff
collect
curate
store
recover
preserve
secure
share
promote
earn from
collaborate with
How do we get hold of other peoples stuff
And how do we get to grips with the economics of
all this???
6
  • Can you help me decide which model for storing
    stuff?
  • (Inter)National
  • Regional
  • HEI
  • Individual
  • Someone else pays (topslice)
  • Shared costs (consortium)
  • Subscription to service (pay-as-u-go)
  • Question Which model works best for which type
of stuff / which desired outcomes?

7
Finding answers.
8
  • JISC Repositories Programme
  • Impressive list of projects
  • Excellent coverage of topics
  • BUT
  • Hard to see how to engage with the themes
  • Hard to see how to reach to the outcomes
    lessons
  • One tends to know about what one (accidentally)
    knows exists
  • Not clear how to answer my questions ? actions

9
  • University repository agenda 5-10 years
  • Publications repository
  • collect workflow
  • promote use
  • monitor use
  • Data repository(ies)
  • categorise stuff (STEM, SocSci, Arts)
  • collect curate
  • promote re-use (inc LT) - tools
  • collaborate
  • Teaching materials repositories
  • pod/vodcasts / web 2.0 archives
