Agenda
  • Objective of this Presentation Introductions
  • Overview of referenced ISO/OMG standards and
    specifications
  • The OSFI Metadata Repository Connection
  • OSFI Business and Technical Reference Models
  • Detail Walkthrough of multi-metadata models
    involved
  • Wrap-up

3
Objectives of this presentation
  • Use Case of metadata repository implementation in
    progress at OSFI
  • Show how multiple metadata models were defined
and used towards the procurement and
    implementation of a metadata repository
  • Showcase the span of metadata and data management
standards that contributed to this effort

4
Office of the Superintendent of Financial
Institutions (OSFI), Canada
  • The primary regulator and supervisor of
  • all banks in Canada,
  • all federally incorporated or registered
  • trust and loan companies,
  • insurance companies,
  • co-operative credit associations,
  • fraternal benefit societies and
  • federally administered pension plans.
  • Its mission is to safeguard policy holders,
depositors and pension plan members from undue
    loss

    Working Groups (WG2)

    implementations

data standards, data warehouse standards and
    enterprise control lists (value domains)
  • Actively promote Enterprise Data Architecture
with emphasis on data quality and data integrity

7
The ISO/IEC 11179 Metadata Registries standard
consists of 6 parts
  • Part 1 - Framework
  • Part 2 - Classification
  • Part 3 - Registry metamodel and basic attributes
  • Part 4 - Formulation of data definitions
  • Part 5 - Naming and identification principles
  • Part 6 - Registration
  • Part 1 explains the purpose of each part.
  • Part 3 specifies the metamodel that defines the
    registry
  • The other parts specify various aspects of the
    use of the registry

8
Each Data element in ISO/IEC 11179 Metadata
Registries
  • should be registered according to the
    Registration guidelines (11179-6)
  • will be uniquely identified within the register
    (11179-5)
  • should be named according to Naming and
    Identification Principles (11179-5)
  • should be defined by the Formulation of Data
    Definitions rules (11179-4)
  • may be classified in a Classification Scheme
    (11179-2)

9
The ISO/IEC 19763 Framework for Metamodel
Interoperability standard consists of 4 parts
  • Part 1 Reference Model
  • Part 2 Core Model
  • Part 3 Metamodel for Ontology Registration
  • Part 4 Metamodel for Model Mapping
  • Part 1 describes concepts and architecture to be
applied in the development and registration of
individual metamodel frameworks in other parts.
  • Part 2 specifies the core model to describe
    metamodel items
  • Part 3 specifies the metamodel that provides a
    facility to register administrative information
    about ontologies
  • Part 4 provides a metamodel for describing
differences in format and type of objects and
transformation rules to be exchanged or shared

Common Warehouse Metamodel (CWM)
  • CWM allows for metadata interchange amongst
  • Organizations data assets
  • BI and Data Warehouse
  • Knowledge management
  • Services that Encompass life cycle of metadata
    including
  • Analysis and Modelling
  • Heterogeneous Databases and legacy systems
  • ETL and mappings, transformations
  • That support the managing of structured and
    unstructured data
  • CWM also supports ER along with UML to enable
    integration

Summary of Metadata Repository Implementation at
OSFI
  • Metadata being shared
  • Need to understand the meaning and context of all
    data within the enterprise
  • Provide reference points for technologists and
    users
  • Track information from definition, design,
    collection to delivery

45
Summary of Metadata Repository Implementation at
OSFI
  • Used ISO Metadata Standards And OMG
    Specifications to stabilize requirements and
    approach (ISO 11179, ISO 19763, ISO 9075, TR9007,
ISO 10032 (RMDM), ISO 10728 (IRDS), CWM, MOF
  • Our Standards based local Metadata Framework,
Reference Models and Data Standards have provided
a stable platform and road map for implementation
    and integration
  • Best-of-breed integration, managing data
    enterprise-wide
  • Thank you ISO and OMGand OFMR(Kobe)2006 for the
