  • 2008 - Where are we now?

3
WELCOME TO MADINA SALAAM !!
You are always welcome to join us here in The
Village of Peace
4
A Virtual Tour of Madina Salaam
Salaam Aleikum!! Peace be with you Aleikum
Salaam!! and with you too! Somoule How is
your family? Ibejay They are there!
Welcome to our humble home.We love it when you
visit us just for a chator even for a meal of
fish and rice.
5
Welcome to our home
This is our Lounge We are very happy to welcome
you here because we are very proud of our new
floor covering!
and this is our Dining Room. We would love you
to join us for our next meal!!
6
.this is our bedroom We have a curtain for a
door and share the room with 2 other family
members..not much privacy here!!
and this is our outdoor kitchen area. As you
can see, we only have few cooking pots as there
is not much variety of food to cook
We use tin cans because pots cost a lot of money
7
Our children work very hard. They help by
carrying water from the well. We use water for
cooking, washing, drinking and for our personal
hygiene
.and they also have to go to our Village shop
to buy oil, tapalapa, cups of rice or sugar. The
wiring stops the temptation of children helping
themselves
8
and here is the local bakery where the local
bread, called Tapalapa is baked.as long as
there is flour available, that is. The baker
supplies the local shop twice every day because
there are no preservatives in this breadso it
goes hard very quickly!!
.and on the way back from the bakery we pass
the Village Mosque where the men pray on Fridays.
9
on the way back from the shop you will often
see some of the children playing with home-made
toys they are VERY proud of these!
you may even see one of the Villagers writing
the Koran in Arabic.on a piece of wood.
and you are SURE to see our local transport
too!!
10
Cooking is an all day activity in the
Villageas you will see as you walk around the
various compounds..not much time for rest!!!
11
and now its TIME TO EAT!!
and after much pounding of rice, cooking of
vegetables and making of the MOST delicious
sauce the meal is ready!!!

QUALITY EDUCATION
a) The Early Years Centre
For approx 10,000, we have built 2 good-quality
Early Years Classrooms with tiled floors and
internal flush toilets.
Volunteers have created an adventure play
ground, built bantabas
and planted trees and other ornamental bushes
which creates much needed shade.
14
We are providing Training and Resources to
enable every child to have
an equal opportunity to enable them to compete
fairly in the 21st century
These children are 3 4 years old
15
Each WYCE classes have - 25
children - 1 Qualified Teacher - 1 Adult
Classroom Assistant - 1 Young Classroom Helper
These children are 6 years old
  • WYCE Teaching Staff are fully supported and
developed by our Education Team and Project
    Volunteers

These children are 5 years old
16
b) The Primary School
In 2004, these children were the 1st ever
Nursery Class to be taught in Madina Salaam
In 2007, they were 7 years old and became WYCEs
1st Primary School Class.
17
  • Volunteers creating a Teachers Resource Room
    and Training Centre
  • Volunteers helping with Teacher Training
    Sessions

18
  • This long building is the Health Centre. It is
now the temporary setting for some of our Nursery
    and Primary Classes.
  • The Health Centre is working in the room at the
far top end of the building

and the temporary Primary Classroom is
situated at the bottom end of this building. The
whole long building has cost approx. 16,000, not
including concrete floors, doors, tiles or toilets
19
  • Primary Health Care

    Health Care Centre.
  • We provide Training and Resources to help the
villagers become healthy and strong individuals

20
  • Parents and baby groups
  • We offer a clean environment for our new-born
    babies

21
  • WYCE is planning to be housing these cataract
operations in the Health Centre in 2008
  • Village Health Records are being kept for the
first time.this is an unusual practice for The
    Gambia

22
b) The Water
  • WYCE has worked hard to construct a system that
provides fresh, clean water to the School,

the Health Centre and other public areas where
the Village
people can also access this water for their
cooking, drinking and washing needs.
23
View of WYCE Education Project so far in
2008 This view shows the small area of WYCE
Project land which has been developed in order
for our Education Targets to be met by the end of
2008. Our NEXT task is to move the Village
Football Pitch onto THIS area in order to
continue developing the site for the permanent
Classrooms required for the future
24
  • SKILLS TRAINING

a) WYCE Bee Farm
  • We are helping to provide Training and
Resources for the development of Local Skills.
  • The Bee Farm was started in 2006 and, at the
first harvest of 1 hive, produced 4 litres of
    delicious honey

25
A purpose-built Bee House has now been
constructed to house the 28 Bee hives in order to
protect them from the heat and the animals
  • Together with the sale of honey and bees wax
candles, the villagers can become gainfully
    employed within their own environment.

26
b) Horticulture
  • The School gardens help teach the children that
Horticulture is a very essential skill in order
to provide good dietary needs for their families

27
  • EMPLOYMENT

a) The Lodge
We hosted over 100 Volunteers at The Lodge
during 2006, and 250 during 2007. Will you help
us beat this in 2008?
28
  • WYCE employs approx 40 Staff, most of whom are
    from Madina Salaam.
  • The Income to the Lodge will soon be able to
pay the Salaries of all WYCE Staff working in The
    Gambia.

29
b) The School
  • WYCE employs 6 Qualified Teachers, 5 Adult
Classroom Assistants and 5 Young Classroom
