What does the N.S.P.C.C. do?
  • The NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Children) is the UK's leading charity
specialising in child protection and the
prevention of cruelty to children. We have been
directly involved in protecting children and
campaigning on their behalf since 1884.
  • 180 community-based teams and projects throughout
    England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • A free, 24-hour Child Protection Helpline that
provides information, advice and counselling to
anyone concerned about a child's safety. We also
run a bilingual Welsh helpline, an Asian helpline
in five Asian languages, and a text phone service
for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

What does the N.S.P.C.C. do?
  • Public education campaigns, to increase
understanding about child abuse and provide
advice and support on positive parenting.
  • Parliamentary campaigning to persuade government,
Parliament and opinion-formers to put children's
issues at the top of the political agenda.
  • Child protection training and advice for
organisations involved in the care, protection
and education of children. For example, local and
health authorities, sports bodies and young
    people's groups.
  • Research into the nature and effects of child
    abuse.
  • Information resources on child protection and
related topics for professionals, the press and
    the general public.
  • Fundraising through individual and corporate
supporters, which provides 85 of the money
needed to pay for our work to end cruelty to
    children.

What is child abuse?
  • Child abuse is when a child suffers harm or even
death because of physical cruelty, emotional
cruelty, sexual abuse or neglect by an adult.
Often the adult is a parent or someone whom the
child knows and trusts. In many cases, the child
may be subjected to a combination of different
kinds of abuse for example, neglect and physical
    abuse.
  • Bullying and racism are also forms of child
abuse. The murder of 10-year old Damilola Taylor
in Peckham, London, was a tragic example of the
violence and victimisation which many children
    and young people face.
