EI Mission
  • To make a substantial contribution to the design
of efficient and effective governance structures
for infrastructure industries (like ICT, energy,
water, transport logistics) at the interface of
    economics and technology.

4
Research Education
  • The main topic of research and teaching is the
    current restructuring of various infrastructure
    industries.
  • The changes are caused by global trends towards
    liberalization, technological innovation and
    shifts in demand.
  • Energy, communications and transport sectors play
a vital role in economic growth and social
welfare a thorough understanding of their
distinctive and common economic characterises is
    of critical importance.
  • Sector specific and generic research is being
conducted with the objective of developing
methods and tools to support institutional
design, management and regulation for the next
    generation infrastructures.

5
Examples of teaching activities
  • Economics of Infrastructures (compulsory BSc and
Msc courses). An introduction into relevant
    economic theories. Economic regulation, sectoral
    organization and public management of
    infrastructures.
  • Institutional Design (compulsory MSc course).
The analysis and design of complex institutional
structures that evolve in conjunction with
    complex technological structures.
  • Economics and Technical Features of Future Energy
Systems (elective MSC course). Technological and
economic aspects of sustainable energy sources,
small scale energy conversation systems and of
the application of these systems in the energy
    infrastructure.
  • Economic Regulation for Infrastructures (elective
    MSc courses). Comparison, analysis and
    explanation of different national and
    international models and instruments of
    regulation in liberalized infrastructures.

ICT Mission
  • The ICT section wants to become a leading
knowledge center in the design and governance of
    secure, adaptive (layered,modular and
intelligent)  ICT service systems and network
infrastructures, that are shared among multiple
actors in both the public and private domain. It
seeks to achieve this by taking an integrative
    approach of the technical, socio-economical,
    policy and management related aspects.
