3- CLASS 1 THE EXPLOSIVES
- As defined by the Explosives ActA substance or
article with a - Mass explosion hazard.
- Fragment projection hazard
- Fire hazard (minor hazard but not mass)
- No significant hazard but explosion effects are
largely confined to the package and no projection
of appreciable size or range are to be expected. - Extremely intensive substance.
4CLASS 2 GASES Flammable gas (commonly used
as fuel propane) Non flammable , non poisonous,
non corrosive ( commonly used in food
refrigeration nitrogen) Poison gas ( bleaching
purposes sulphur dioxide) Corrosive Gas (
commonly used in fertilizers anhydrous ammonia)
5CLASS 3
FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS A liquid which has a closed
cup flash point not greater than
61degrees. Commonly used as fuel ( Examples are
gasoline, diesel, ethanol)
6CLASS 4
- FLAMMABLE SOLIDS
- A solid that under normal conditions of transport
is readily combustible, or would cause or
contribute to fire through fiction or from heat
retained from manufacturing or processing or
which undergo exothermic reactions. - ( commonly used in lacquers nitrocellulose)
- A substance liable to spontaneous combustion
under normal conditions or when in contact with
the air. ( rocket fuel diethylzinc) - A substance that on contact with water emits
dangerous quantities of flammable gases.
7CLASS 5 OXIDIZING SUBSTANCES AND ORGANIC
PEROXIDES A substance which acts as a catalyst
for the combustion of other materials by
providing oxidizing substances whether or not the
substance is combustible itself. (commonly used
in the fertilizers ammonium nitrate) An
organic compound that contains the bivalent O-O-
structure . (commonly used in automobile body
shops as body filter dibenzoyl peroxide)
8POISONOUS AND INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCE CLASS 6
Poisonous (toxic) substances Solid or liquid
that is poisonous through inhalation of its
vapours, by skin contact or by ingestion.
Infectious are used in disease research.
POISONOUS

Packing group I
Packing group III
Chemical reagents
Used in Solvent and paint removers
Germicides
9RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS CLASS 7 The most
common use of these materials are in nuclear fuel
rods. There are three categories which indicate
the surface radiation level for a package with
Category I being the lowest level and III being
the highest.
10CORROSIVE MATERIALS CLASS 8 A substance that
causes visible necrosis of skin or corrodes steel
or non clad aluminium. These are commonly used
in batteries and industrial cleaner.
11MISCELLANEOUS SUBSTANCES CLASS 9 A substance or
a product presenting dangers sufficient to
warrant regulation in transport but which cannot
be described to any other class. It can be
environmentally hazardous or dangerous waste.
