Real Examples from Alums
  • I applied to and was accepted into the Beginning
Arabic Critical Language Scholarship Program in
Tunis, Tunisia. I was drawn to this program
because of my love of foreign cultures (I majored
in Anthropology), my fascination with languages,
and my research interests in Islamic diasporas
and the Muslim world. Among my fellow American
students are graduate students in Creative
    Writing, International Education and Political
Science, and undergraduates interested in Islamic
art and architecture, water management, Global
Health and the historical and present-day ties
between the Maghreb, Spain, and France. Clearly,
one need not have an interest in
counter-terrorism or State Department work in
order to qualify for a Critical Language
    Scholarship !
  • I plan to continue my Arabic studies and am
strongly considering applying for a Fulbright to
return here in a year's time. In the meantime, I
will be teaching English in France through the
    French Government's English Language Teaching
    Assistantship Program.

Real Examples from Alums
  • I took advantage of internships in my area of
interest (business of sport) following graduation
in 1992. Summer of 1992, I interned with both the
PGA Tour and Sports Illustrated (1992 Summer
Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain). Upon return
to the States, I was offered a position at an
advertising agency, working on an account team
    dedicated to managing sports sponsorship
activities. You will find successful Duke alums
in whatever your field of interest. This
certainly provides a level of comfort that
someone who once sat in your position has been
able to achieve a certain level of "success.
  • Derrick Heggans, T92
  • General Manager, AOL Sports

12
Real Examples from Alums
  • I served as a Teaching Fellow in a two year
fellowship with a non-profit called Citizen
Schools. In my job, I work with at-risk middle
schoolers during their school day and in our
afterschool enrichment program. While at Duke, I
knew that I wanted to go to medical school.
However, I also knew that I wanted to take some
time off before going back to school. Having
loved my experiences with community service
during my time at Duke, I applied to several
service opportunities. I chose to work with
Citizen Schools because they have a unique
perspective on how to change the way we address
    education in this country.
