  • Safeguard Military Essential Port Infrastructure.
  • Keep the MEW Open.

HAZMAT and Vessel Safety
  • USCG is here to assist you in assuring that your
    cargo, the vessel and the crew arrive in theatre
    safely.
  • Vessel Accidents happen all the time.
  • Almost all HAZMAT can be shipped
  • It needs to be identified, segregated and stowed
    accordingly.
  • Containers need to be serviceable and properly
    packed and dunnaged.

What can you do to help?
  • Declare and document your HAZMAT
  • Affix placards and have extras to reapply to the
    ones that blew off
  • Prepare to have extra locks or better yet seals
    available for the containers
  • Consolidate HAZMAT
  • Use serviceable containers or repair before
    loading

Lessons learned from 2003
  • While IMDG is being used, be aware that parts of
    49 CFR may apply to your shipment.
  • Secure fire extinguishers in brackets
  • If not properly drained/cleaned, over packed
    jerri cans are regulated
  • Have purge certificates available
  • Affix paperwork inside right door in case it
    blows off during shipment.
  • Properly segregate, stow, and secure cylinders

  • Dunnage cargo for movement on all axis
  • Be sure Battery terminals are secure.
  • Cylinders in vehicles are HAZMAT.
  • Place all HAZMAT at rear of container
  • Portable generators/engines are regulated. Fixed
    units will be treated as vehicles.
  • Limited Quantity must be declared
  • Containers must be in good condition for shipment
    by water. (IICL standards).
