What is encryption?
  • Process whereby data is encoded or scrambled to
    make it unintelligible to eavesdroppers and the
    data is decoded or converted back to its original
    form by means of a key available only to the
    intended recipient of that data. (p.224

Rijndael, a new algorithm
  • An AES algorithm chosen by the Federal
    Information Processing Standard (FIPS), a US
    Government organization.
  • Created by cryptographers from Belgium Dr. Joan
    Daemen (Yo'-ahn Dah'-mun) of Proton World
    International and Dr. Vincent Rijmen (Rye'-mun),

Why Rijndael?
  • Rijndael's combination of security, performance,
    efficiency, ease of implementation and
    flexibility make it an appropriate selection for
    the AES.
  • DES takes a matter of hours to break, while
    128-bit AES encryption takes over 149 Trillion
    years.
  • The Universe is only 20 billion years old!!!
