In 1968 the Santa Fe Railway discontinued rail
passenger service to the South rim of the Grand
Canyon. In 1989 the Grand Canyon Railway
restarted rail trips between Williams, Arizona
and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Plus
Coconino Canyon train ride from 2008.

Redlands Dam broke flood
More than 400 people are being evacuated by
helicopter from a village near the Grand Canyon
in Arizona after a dam burst due to heavy rain.
The building of the Glen Canyon Dam permanently
reduced flows in the Canyon affecting the
ecosystem.

1979 Designation as a World Heritage Site on
October 26 There are approximately 1,737 known
species of vascular plants, 167 species of fungi,
64 species of moss and 195 species of lichen
found in Grand Canyon National Park. This variety
is largely due to the 8,000 foot elevation change
from the river up to the highest point on the
North Rim.

2008 - U.S. officials released a flood into the
Grand Canyon to try to undo damage caused by the
construction of the Glen Canyon Dam in the 1960s.
