KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS

The Story of King Arthur
  • Arthur was the first born son of King Uther
Pendragon and heir to the throne. However these
were very troubled times and Merlin, a wise
magician, advised that the baby Arthur should be
raised in a secret place and that none should
    know his true identity.

Story of King Arthur Continued
  • As Merlin feared, when King Uther died there was
great conflict over who should be the next king.
Merlin used his magic to set a sword in a stone.
Written on the sword, in letters of gold,  were
these words "Whoso pulleth out this sword of
this stone is the rightwise born king of all
England." Of course all the contenders for the
throne took their turn at trying to draw the
sword, but none could succeed. Arthur, quite by
chance, withdrew the sword for another to use in
a tournament. Following this he became King.

King Arthurs Achievements
  • The King Arthur of legend would have lived in
post-Roman Britain. At a time when there was a
power vacuum in Britain in the 5th and 6th
centuries, the British had to defend themselves
against several invasions. The most worrying of
these invaders were the Anglo-Saxons from
northern Europe. It is during this fight for the
control of Britain that the historical figure is
    thought to have lived.

5
King Arthurs Achievements Continued
  • Any battles King Arthur fought would have been
against the Saxon invaders, who had established
themselves in the south east corner of England,
and were expanding their territory both north and
west. At the same time, their appear to have been
Pict incursions into England from Scotland.
  • Battles were generally fought to gain land, and
it was not until Badon, where a British defeat of
the Saxons resulted in a generation of peace.
