  • The director of this course, Ms. Schwab, is
    willing and interested in working with a local
    hospice to incorporate more information on
    Hospice and Palliative Care.
  • Have workshops and refresher sessions in
    communicating bad news to patients.
  • Possibly incorporate hospice and palliative care
    into the Internal Medicine rotation for students.

Thoughts and Ideas contd.
  • Help to educate physicians more about hospice and
    palliative care by inviting them to these
    discussions/forums/lunches
  • Continue to make suggestions of ways to
    incorporate various lectures from this internship
    into the curriculum of the ECM course.
  • Work to have a pain management lecture added to
    the Pharm curriculum, as well as a physiology of
    death and dying added to the physiology
    curriculum
  • Find ways to encourage the professors and staff
    to start incorporating the language of
    palliative care into the basic science
    curriculum the first two years of medical school.

  • Use the death and dying interest group as a way
    to gather students to discuss EOL issues.
  • Offer 1st and 2nd years the opportunity to
    volunteer with Hospice.

    Natural Death)
  • Would be interested in organizing seminars as
    part of the psychosocial rotation for IM
    residents and students

  • - Medical director of St. Josephs Hospice in
    Augusta
  • She is currently working to make a free standing
    Hospice facility in Augusta, Ga.
  • Wants to work with me on future projects
  • She is interested in putting together a little
    booklet/pamphlet for doctors and students
  • Pain management made easy or something like that

Dr. Ines Berger
  • Runs a cancer and palliative care clinic
  • She is interested in educating physicians about
    palliative care, and she claims that physicians
    do not utilize her services often enough. She
    would be interested in having a lunch series for
    physicians as well.
  • There is some interest in starting an inpatient
    service for care. Currently there is an
    outpatient service with nurse, pharm, pain doc,
    psych, chaplain, and SW

JT Tolentino 4th year
  • We need better training on how EOL care is
    delivered, and how we as clinicians need to
    approach patients.
  • I wish MCG would somehow integrate Hospice time
    for medical students to speak with families and
    patients to learn how they deal with things so we
    can have some experience.
