Title: Bodies of Water and Landforms

1
Bodies of Water and Landforms
  • World Geography

2
The Oceans and Seas
  • 71 of the Earth is covered by salt water
  • ? 60 of the Northern Hemisphere
  • ? 81 of the Southern Hemisphere
  • Four main parts of the oceans Atlantic Ocean,
Pacific Ocean, Arctic Ocean, and Indian Ocean
  • Pacific Ocean is the Largest
  • Water near Antarctica is sometimes called the
    Southern Ocean

3
Ocean Motion
  • 3 Types Currents, Waves, and Tides
  • Currents Like rivers flowing through the Ocean
  • Waves- swells or ridges caused by winds
  • Tides- Regular rises and falls of the ocean
created by the gravitational pull of the moon or
    the sun.
  • All of these three moving waters vary in size

4
The Hydrologic Cycle
5
Lakes, Rivers, and Streams
  • 95 of the Earths fresh water is located in
    lakes around the world
  • Can you name any lakes?
  • The Great lakes in Central Northern America is
the cause of Glacial movement thousands of years
    ago
  • Local Lakes Tims Ford, Center Hill, Percy
    Priest, Old Hickory, Normandy

6
Tennessee Bodies of Water
7
Uses of Rivers and Streams
  • Transporting goods along rivers was common
  • Filtration water systems for drinking water
  • Dams are built to produce electric power by
    causing hydroelectric power
  • Irrigation for Agriculture
  • Fishing
  • Recreation/Sport
  • Picture is of Civil War Soldiers bathing

8
More Pictures of River/Stream Uses
9
Animals of the River
10
Review
  • How much of the earth is the made of salt water?
  • How much of the southern hemisphere is made up of
    saltwater?
  • What percentage of freshwater is located in
    lakes?
  • What are some of the uses of rivers and streams?

11
Landforms
12
Landforms in the United States
13
Landforms
  • Landforms are formed by erosion
  • Different kinds of erosion
  • Water Erosion- Water picks up loose material and
carries the material downstream slowly chipping
away the contents of a river or stream
  • Wind Erosion- wind picks up loose material and
blows the material against rock surfaces, etc.
  • Glacial Erosion- mass of ice that carves its way
through a given area, pulled by gravity

14
Quiz
  • 1.) What is the amount of salt water that covers
    the earth?
  • 2.) How many parts of the ocean are there?
  • 3.) What is the largest part of the ocean?
  • 4.) List the three types of motion in the Ocean?
  • 5.) What causes the tide to roll in and roll out?
  • 6.) List 3 landforms listed in the powerpoint.
  • 7.) What are the three types of erosion?
  • 8.) List and explain 2 uses of a River.

15
Essay
  • Essay is worth 25 points
  • Must be at least 12 sentences.
  • Question
  • We have discussed many different
landforms in the state of Tennessee as well as in
other places in the U.S. How could some of these
landforms affect the world in which we live and
how could they affect weather? List specific
    examples and explain your reasons.
