The present tense (indicative) in Spanish can
mean five things.
  • Hablo
  • I speak (customary action)
  • I do speak (emphatic form)
  • I will speak (near future)
  • I am speaking (action in progress)
  • Do I speak (interrogative)

To express an action in progress right now, we
use the gerund (ing form ) of the verb.
  • Remove the infinitive ar, -er, -ir
  • Add ando for ar verbs
  • Add iendo for er -ir verbs
  • Use it with estar to form the present progressive

  • If the verb ends in er or ir and the stem ends
    in a vowel
  • add yendo instead of iendo.

  • creer gt creyendo
  • oír gt oyendo

  • Use the u which appears in preterite
    third-persons forms in the gerund
