TIPS FOR PARENTS!!!!
  • Gain computer knowledge
  • Gain Internet knowledge
  • Know how to find files (pictures and temporary
    Internet files)
  • Surf the Net with your younger child
  • Keep computer in a common area of the home with
screen facing AWAY from a wall
  • Set time limits for Internet use

51
Gain Computer Knowledge
  • Take a class
  • Get tutorial software (ex. Video Professor)
  • Learn by doing its really hard to break a
    computer without a hammer
  • A computer is a multi use item its a library,
    file cabinet, toolbox, entertainment apparatus,
    and an office/business instrument

52
Gain Internet Knowledge
  • The Internet is a wonderful for research,
    entertainment, current events, etc.
  • You wont know exactly whats out there until you
    surf
  • You cant break the Internet
  • There is something for you on the Internet
whatever interests you have, you can find online

53
Know how to find files (pictures temporary
Internet files)
  • Your computer keeps a log of Internet activity
check it even though it can be erased
  • Learn how to use the Search or Find functions
    on the computer
  • Learn how to use the Parental Controls on the web
    browser

54
Surf the Net with your younger child
  • Youll learn together
  • They can show you their favorite areas of the
Internet (chat rooms, gaming, bulletin boards,
    etc.)
  • Develops a bond when you ask for THEIR help on
    the computer

55
Keep computer in common area
  • Family room, living room, home office, any area
that all family members have access to
  • Face screen away from any wall
  • You wouldnt allow a stranger in your childs
room, dont allow them there via a computer
  • Think Mall Would you drop your child off alone
at the mall? Dont drop them off online alone

56
Set Time Limits for Internet Use
  • If they cant run the streets at 2 am, then they
probably dont need to be on the computer then
    either
  • Theres a time for everything (dinner, homework,
    TV, Internet use)
  • Encourage your childs other interests

57
Prevention The Best Weapon
  • Dont rely on any filtering or blocking software
They are good, but they dont take the place of
    a caring concerned parent
  • Promise your children you wont become angry if
they come to you with a problem regarding an
    online situation
  • Set a good example Are your children doing
something bad on their own, or are they mirroring
    your use?????

58
Prevention (continued)
  • Your home may be safe, but what about their
    friends home (computers are literally
    everywhere)
  • Tell your child to NEVER give out personal
    information on line to ANYONE
  • NEVER meet in person someone they met online
unless you know about it and are present (then
    only in a public area)

59
Prevention (continued)
  • Do not store passwords of other personal details
on computer (online predators can get this
    information)
  • You or your child should never reply to harassing
    or uncomfortable E-mail or messages
  • Do not enter too much information on ID profiles
(usually on IM services or AOL)
  • Contact ISP if there is harassment via E-mail

60
Prevention (continued)
  • Call law enforcement if harassment becomes
    threatening
  • Call law enforcement if a child is sent
    pornography
  • If you receive what you suspect is child
pornography DO NOT PRINT, SAVE, OR FORWARD IT!!!!
    ITS A FELONY!!!!
  • Write down the Internet address and give that to
    law enforcement (local or FBI)

61
Prevention (continued)
  • If you discover an attempt to lure your child by
an on-line predator, call law enforcement
  • Print out any messages or e-mail received from
the suspected predator make a note of their
    screen name or e-mail address

62
Danger Signs In Your Child
  • Switching screens rapidly when you come into the
room (what are they looking at?)
  • Phone calls from unknown adults for you child
  • Late night computer use
  • Sudden influx of cash or new items from unknown
    sources (predators will give gifts)
  • Unusually upset at Internet interruption
  • Withdrawal from family or friends (predators work
to drive a wedge between them and their target)

63
Its up to each of us to make sure that the
children of today, do not become the victims of
tomorrow!
