IRONY
  • Verbal Irony
  • Dramatic Irony
  • Situational Irony

3
VERBAL IRONY
  • This is the contrast between what is said and
what is meant. Verbal irony is often sarcasm.

4
DRAMATIC IRONY
  • This is the contrast between what the character
thinks to be true and what we (the readers) know
    to be true.
  • Tragic Irony is a form of dramatic irony where a
character may use words which have one meaning to
him and a different meaning to the audience or
    reader.

5
SITUATIONAL IRONY
  • This is the contrast between what happens and
what was expected (or what would seem
    appropriate).
  • This is the most common form of irony in
    literature.

6
REALISM
  • Naturalism
  • Determinism

7
REALISM
  • Is a slice of life.
  • Deals with ordinary people.
  • Discusses social questions and their impact on
    the individual.
  • Is faithful to characters at the expense of
    action in the story.

8
NATURALISM
  • Falls under the Realism umbrella.
  • In the man v. nature conflict, nature ALWAYS
    wins.

9
DETERMINISM
  • Human behavior is determined by forces outside
    the persons power.
  • The philosophical doctrine stating that every
state of affairs, including every human event,
act and decision, is an inevitable consequence.
  • Nature follows exact laws, so what will happen
    will happen.
  • Diametrically opposed to free will.
