Title: The Crucifixion of Christ

1
The Crucifixion of Christ
  • is at the core of the plan of salvation!
  • has an even deeper meaning for the Christian.
  • Look again at the illustration of the crucified
    Christ

2
The Illustration
  • Christ died on the cross.
  • When we become a Christian, we put the old man of
sin to death on the cross with Jesus.
  • Once we have died, we rise with Jesus to walk in
    newness of life (Romans 64).

3
The Crucifixion of Christ
  • is at the core of the plan of salvation!
  • has an even deeper meaning for the Christian.
  • Look again at the illustration of the crucified
    Christ
  • Hear again the lesson of the crucified Christ

4
The Lesson
  • While our old man is hanging on the cross, let us
    hear what Jesus saysliterally.
  • Lets hear the seven messages of Jesus from the
cross and apply them to the illustrations of the
old man dying and the new man emerging.

5
Crucified With Christ - Part 2
  • ____________, 2013

6
It Is Finished
  • John 1930

7
It Is Finished
  • These were the final words of Jesusat the end of
    His journey.
  • He had completed His mission.
  • He had become sin for us, andbore the
    consequences of sinfor us.
  • He was the innocent Lambof God.

8
But Who Else Is On The Cross?
  • The old man of sin.
  • The old man that was crucified with Him.
  • The old man of sin should repeat the same words
  • It is finished
  • My life of sin is dead its over
  • The body of sin is done away with (Romans 66)
  • We are no longer slaves of sin

9
I Thirst
  • John 1928

10
I Thirst
  • We often forget that this is a fulfillment of
prophecy (Psalm 6921 And for my thirst they
    gave me vinegar to drink.).
  • This shows the humanity of Christ.
  • This also shows the deity of Christ through the
fulfillment of all prophecies even one that
    might seem (to us) insignificant.

11
I Thirst
  • But listen again to what Jesus saysI thirst
and apply it to the onewho would follow after
    Him!
  • Matthew 56 Blessed arethose who hunger and
    thirstafter righteousness, for theyshall be
    filled
  • This points to our desire for Godand His word!

12
I Thirst
  • When we become a Christian, our focus and desire
    should change to spiritual concerns.
  • Revelation 216 And He said to me, It is
done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning
and the End. I will give of the fountain of the
water of life freely to him who thirsts.
  • Who will receive the water of life?
  • The one who thirsts
  • The one who has the right attitude and the right
    focus
  • Can you survive without the living water?

13
Woman, Behold Your SonBehold Your Mother!
  • John 1926-27

14
Woman, Behold Your SonBehold Your Mother!
  • Listen to the words again from theperspective of
the old man whois hanging on the cross with
    Jesus.
  • Do you remember what Jesus hadsaid previously
    about His family?
  • Luke 820-21
  • Luke 1253

15
Luke 820-21 1253
  • And it was told Him by some, who said, Your
mother and Your brothers are standing outside,
    desiring to see You.
  • 21 But He answered and said to them, My mother
and My brothers are these who hear the word of
    God and do it.
  • Father will be divided against son and son
against father, mother against daughter and
    daughter against mother, mother-in-law against
    her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against
    her mother-in-law.

16
Woman, Behold Your SonBehold Your Mother!
  • Families will be divided because of the old man
hanging on the cross with Christ.
  • But when we become a Christian, we gain a new
    family.
  • When we come down from the cross, we are born
    anew.
  • Not convinced? Read Acts 2 and the start of the
    early church!

17
Father, Forgive Them, For They Do Not Know What
They Do
  • Luke 2334

18
Father, Forgive Them
  • This is one of the most remarkable messages we
    hear Jesus say.
  • Luke 2333 And when they had come to the place
called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the
criminals, one on the right hand and the other on
    the left.
  • Then, Jesus asks God to forgive them.

19
Father, Forgive Them
  • What a remarkable Savior we have!
  • Even in death, His humility, love, and merciful
    nature aremanifested.
  • Can you imagine having thesame type attitude if
    those thingswere done to you?

20
Father, Forgive Them
  • Listen again to Jesus words on the cross.
  • When we rise to walk in newness of life, what
type of spirit should we display?
  • If we want God to forgive us, we had better be
    ready to forgive others!

21
Father, Forgive Them
  • Does our righteousness exceed that of the
    worlds?
  • Are we different from the world?
  • Have we truly been crucified with Christ?
  • This morning
  • Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with
    Me in Paradise
  • My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
  • Father, in Your hands I commend My spirit.

22
Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with
Me in Paradise
  • Luke 2343

23
Luke 2339-40
  • Then one of the criminals who were hanged
blasphemed Him, saying, If You are the Christ,
    save Yourself and us.
  • 40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying,
Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under
    the same condemnation?

24
You will be with me in Paradise
  • Look at the amazing faith on thepart of the one
    criminal!
  • Hes watching Jesus die.
  • And he realizes that Jesus isstill going to
    establish Hiskingdom.
  • Jesus recognizes that faith, andpromises him
    Paradise.

25
How does that apply to us?
  • Our old man of sin is hanging on the cross with
    Jesus.
  • Perhaps we could explain that we have the same
hope as the criminalif we have faith like he
    did.
  • But also think about it this way
  • Jesus had power on earth to forgive sins.
  • He had the right to promise Paradise to this
    man.
  • No one else has this ability!

26
What should be our focus?
  • After we have died to sin and have started our
    new lives
  • our focus should be to take others where we are
    going!
  • Just like our Lord!
  • How many have you influenced in such a way that
they will want to go to Heaven?

27
My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
  • Mark 1534

28
Mark 1534
  • And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a
loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama
sabachthani? which is translated, My God, My
God, why have You forsaken Me?

29
Why have You forsaken Me?
  • In these words, we hear the reality of Jesus
    pain and suffering.
  • We are reminded of the suffering of Jesus in the
    Garden of Gethsemane.
  • Being in agony.
  • Father, let this cup pass from Me.
  • Sweat as drops of blood.
  • In order for the plan to be accomplished, God had
to turn His back on His Son.

30
Why have you forsaken Me?
  • What was the answer to Jesusquestion?
  • It was because of our sins.
  • We should always be remindedthat it is because
of our sinsthat Jesus had to die!
  • As our old man is hanging onthe cross with
Jesus, we should remember the words of the
    criminal

31
Luke 2341
  • And we indeed justly, for we receive the due
reward of our deeds but this Man has done
    nothing wrong.

32
Why have You forsaken Me?
  • We are forever indebted to our Lord for that
    sacrifice!
  • Romans 812 We are debtors
  • Does knowing Jesus died because of your sin lead
you to live a life of service to Him?

33
Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit
  • Luke 2346

34
Luke 2344-46
  • Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was
darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
45 Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the
temple was torn in two. 46 And when Jesus had
cried out with a loud voice, He said, Father,
into Your hands I commit My spirit. Having
said this, He breathed His last.

35
Father, into Your hands
  • Jesus put His trust in His Father.
  • This was a new experiencefor Him.
  • Death is a scary thought.
  • But He faced it by turning itover to His Father.

36
Father, into Your hands
  • Becoming a Christian can be intimidating,
    nerve-wracking, and even scary.
  • But we just turn it over to God!
  • Not my will, but Thy will be done
  • When we allow that old man to breathe his last,
and we rise to walk in newness of life
  • We turn our lives over to God.
  • We let Him direct our spirits.

37
The Application
  • The old man has died.
  • The new man emerges
  • Listen to the words of Jesus in John 141-6

38
John 141-3
  • Let not your heart be troubled you believe in
God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Fathers house
are many mansions if it were not so, I would
have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will
come again and receive you to Myself that where
I am, there you may be also.

39
John 144-6
  • And where I go you know, and the way you know.
5 Thomas said to Him, Lord, we do not know where
You are going, and how can we know the way?
  • 6 Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth,
and the life. No one comes to the Father except
    through Me.
