  • - inhalation
  • - absorption
    through
  • skin

5
Mode of action
  • Cumulative poison
  • Rapidly absorbed through GIT, lungs skin
  • Oxidised to formic acid formaldehyde with the
    production of lactic acid
  • IT CAUSES
  • - metabolic acidosis
  • - degenrative changes in
  • internal organs retina

6
  • Fatal dose 60 240mL
  • 15mL cause blindness
  • Fatal period 24 - 36 hrs

  • Urine is strongly acidic and contains
  • -
    albumin

  • - formic acid
  • Death occurs from respiratory failure

9
treatment
  • Protect eyes from light
  • Maintain ventilation BP
  • Gastric lavage 5 Sod. Bicarbonate in warm
  • water
  • Sod. bicarbonate to combat acidosis
  • 50 Ethanol (oral)

  • Haemodialysis

10
AUTOPSY FINDINGS
  • Stomach intestine are hyperaemic,
  • congested and inflamed with patchy
  • submucous haemorrhage
  • Brain, meninges, lungs kidneys are
  • congested and oedematous
  • Blood is generally fluid dark
  • Oedema of optic disc optic nerve atrophy

11
Medicolegal aspects
