Important for Students?

• Worker safety is the most important for students
  in the workplace
• They are the most susceptible to abuse by
  employers assume that students do not know the
  law
• Students are unlikely to refuse work out of
  ignorance of their rights
• Students do not want to lose their jobs or do not
  recognize the dangers around them

EMPLOYEE RIGHTS

• As an employee, you have three main rights
  regarding safety
• Know about hazards in your workplace
• Participate in Health and Safety Training
• Refuse any unsafe work

EMPLOYER RIGHTS

• Although these seem like they are not rights,
  they protect the employer as much as the
  employees
• Abide by Canadian Labour Laws
• Inform workers of foreseeable hazards
• Maintain procedures to report hazards
• Pay employees for work-related injuries
• Control all hazardous materials

EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Practice safe work procedures
• Report unsafe conditions
• Wear appropriate safety equipment
• Know emergency procedures
• Report all work-related injuries
• Employees are responsible to themselves and their
  peers, as well as to their employer

EMPLOYER RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide and maintain a safe environment
• Maintain appropriate equipment and provide safety
  training upgrades
• Maintain first aid kits
• Post Health and Safety training
• Follow proper injury procedures
• Pay wages to employees for lost work time for
  on-the-job accidents

WSIB

• Workplace Safety and Insurance Board
• Provincial agency that worked with both workers
  and employers relating to an injury
• WSIB reimburses medical costs and lost wages to
  the employee
• WSIB provides protection to the employers against
  legal action from injured employees

ROLE OF THE WSIB

• Supervise Ontarios safety and training programs
• Supply disability benefits to employees
• Monitor the quality of health care
• Assist in the early return to work
• Monitor abuse by fraudulent claims
• Funded by premiums paid by employers
