Title: Proverbs 9
1Proverbs 9
2Proverbs 10The fruit of wisdom and
foolishness contrasted
3The wise or foolish son
- (Prov 101 NKJV) The Proverbs of Solomon A wise
son makes a glad father, But a foolish son is the
grief of his mother.
- (Prov 101 TLB) Happy is the man with a
level-headed son sad the mother of a rebel.
4Take Action to Correct a Child
- (Prov 2215 NKJV) Foolishness is bound up in the
heart of a child The rod of correction will
drive it far from him. - Foolishness seams to be the more accurate
translation.
- (Prov 2215 TLB) A youngster's heart is
filled with rebellion, but punishment will drive
it out of him.
5Discipline is to be Serious
- (Prov 1918 NKJV) Chasten your son while there
is hope, And do not set your heart on his
destruction.
- (Prov 1918 KJV) Chasten thy son while there is
hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.
6Do not withhold correction
- (Prov 2313-14 NKJV) Do not withhold correction
from a child, For if you beat him with a rod, he
will not die. 14 You shall beat him with a rod,
And deliver his soul from hell.
- (Prov 2313-14 NIV) Do not withhold discipline
from a child if you punish him with the rod, he
will not die. 14 Punish him with the rod and
save his soul from death.
7Help Your Children Honor You.
- (Eph 62-3 NKJV) "Honor your father and mother,"
which is the first commandment with promise 3
"that it may be well with you and you may live
long on the earth."
- (Exo 2012 NKJV) "Honor your father and your
mother, that your days may be long upon the land
which the LORD your God is giving you.
8Two aspects of training.
- (Prov 2915 TLB) Scolding and spanking a child
helps him to learn. Left to himself, he brings
shame to his mother.
- (Prov 2915 NASB) The rod and reproof give
wisdom, But a child who gets his own way brings
shame to his mother.
9Correct your son
- (Prov 2917 NKJV) Correct your son, and he will
give you rest Yes, he will give delight to your
soul.
- (Prov 2917 NIV) Discipline your son, and he
will give you peace he will bring delight to
your soul.
10Knowing God is Essential to Training
- (Prov 2918 NASB) Where there is no vision, the
people are unrestrained, But happy is he who
keeps the law.
- (Prov 2918 TLB) Where there is ignorance of
God, crime runs wild but what a wonderful thing
it is for a nation to know and keep his laws.
11- Children are
- like wet cement.
- Whatever falls on them makes an impression.
- Ginnott, Haim
12Tough Love
- (Prov 1324 NKJV) He who spares his rod hates
his son, But he who loves him disciplines him
promptly.
- (Prov 1324 NCV) If you do not punish your
children, you don't love them, but if you love
your children, you will correct them.
13Wickedness is not profitable
- (Prov 102 NKJV/KJV) Treasures of wickedness
profit nothing, But righteousness delivers from
death.
- (Prov 102 TLB) Ill-gotten gain brings no
lasting happiness right living does.
14God blesses the righteous
- (Prov 103 NKJV) The LORD will not allow the
righteous soul to famish, But He casts away the
desire of the wicked.
- (Prov 103 NIV) The LORD does not let the
righteous go hungry but he thwarts the craving of
the wicked.
15- God rewards hard work in this life.
16Hard work pays off
- (Prov 104 NKJV) He who has a slack hand becomes
poor, But the hand of the diligent makes rich.
- (Prov 104 NIV) Lazy hands make a man poor, but
diligent hands bring wealth.
17Use the Moment
- (Prov 105 NKJV) He who gathers in summer is a
wise son He who sleeps in harvest is a son who
causes shame.
- (Prov 105 NIV) He who gathers crops in summer
is a wise son, but he who sleeps during harvest
is a disgraceful son.
18The Bible Fool
- (Prov 106 NKJV) Blessings are on the head of
the righteous, But violence covers the mouth of
the wicked.
- Covereth ... - The meaning is perhaps, the
violence which the wicked has done is as a
bandage over his mouth, reducing him to a silence
and shame, like the condemned criminal Est_78,
whose face is covered.
19Covering a criminals face
- (Est 78 NKJV) When the king returned from the
palace garden to the place of the banquet of
wine, Haman had fallen across the couch where
Esther was. Then the king said, "Will he also
assault the queen while I am in the house?" As
the word left the king's mouth, they covered
Haman's face.
20Righteousness leaves good memories
- (Prov 107 NKJV) The memory of the righteous is
blessed, But the name of the wicked will rot.
- (Prov 107 TLB) We all have happy memories of
good men gone to their reward, but the names of
wicked men stink after them.
21Wise men will listen to instructions
- (Prov 108 NKJV) The wise in heart will receive
commands, But a prating fool will fall.
- (Prov 108 NIV) The wise in heart accept
commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.
22You will pay!
- (Prov 109 NKJV) He who walks with integrity
walks securely, But he who perverts his ways will
become known.
- (Prov 109 NCV) The honest person will live in
safety, but the dishonest will be caught.

24It is a scripture!
- (Num 3223 NKJV) "But if you do not do so, then
take note, you have sinned against the LORD and
be sure your sin will find you out.

- (Prov 1010 NKJV) He who winks with the eye
causes trouble, But a prating fool will fall.
- (Prov 1010 NCV) A wink may get you into
trouble, and foolish talk will lead to your ruin.
26- The importance of what we say!
27Half the verse already covered.
- (Prov 1011 NKJV) The mouth of the righteous is
a well of life, But violence covers the mouth of
the wicked.
- (Prov 106 NKJV) Blessings are on the head of
the righteous, But violence covers the mouth of
the wicked.
28Its important what you say
- (Prov 1011 NKJV) The mouth of the righteous is
a well of life, But violence covers the mouth of
the wicked.
- (Mat 1234-37 NKJV) "Brood of vipers! How can
you, being evil, speak good things? For out of
the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
29Its important what you say
- (Mat 1234-37 NKJV) 35 "A good man out of the
good treasure of his heart brings forth good
things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure
brings forth evil things. 36 "But I say to you
that for every idle word men may speak, they will
give account of it in the day of judgment. 37
"For by your words you will be justified, and by
your words you will be condemned."
30Be careful what you say
- (Prov 1013 NASB) On the lips of the discerning,
wisdom is found, But a rod is for the back of him
who lacks understanding.
- (Prov 1013 NCV) Smart people speak wisely, but
people without wisdom should be punished. - (They may say the wrong thing at the wrong time,
or even slander.)
31Be careful what you say
- (Prov 1014 NKJV) Wise people store up
knowledge, But the mouth of the foolish is near
destruction.
- (Prov 1014 TLB) A wise man holds his tongue.
Only a fool blurts out everything he knows that
only leads to sorrow and trouble.
32James on the Tongue
- (James 31-10 NKJV) My brethren, let not many of
you become teachers, knowing that we shall
receive a stricter judgment. 2 For we all
stumble in many things. If anyone does not
stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also
to bridle the whole body. 3 Indeed, we put bits
in horses' mouths that they may obey us, and we
turn their whole body.
33James on the Tongue
- (James 31-10 NKJV) 4 Look also at ships
although they are so large and are driven by
fierce winds, they are turned by a very small
rudder wherever the pilot desires. 5 Even so
the tongue is a little member and boasts great
things. See how great a forest a little fire
kindles!
34James on the Tongue
- (James 31-10 NKJV) 6 And the tongue is a fire,
a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among
our members that it defiles the whole body, and
sets on fire the course of nature and it is set
on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and
bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is
tamed and has been tamed by mankind.
35James on the Tongue
- (James 31-10 NKJV) 8 But no man can tame the
tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly
poison. 9 With it we bless our God and Father,
and with it we curse men, who have been made in
the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth
proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these
things ought not to be so.
