The Short Story is

• A story with a fully developed theme but
  significantly shorter and less elaborate than a
  novel
• Usually only tackles one issue/focuses on one
  significant aspect because its setting and plot
  are limited due to time constraints
• It must still to tell a complete and satisfying
  story in a much shorter frame, making a good
  short story difficult to write

Plot

• A plot is a series of events and character
  actions that relate to the central conflict
• You will need to know Freytags Pyramid and its
  5 parts (this should be a review)

Conflict

• The conflict is a struggle between two people or
  things in a short story. The main character is
  usually on one side of the central conflict.

• Person vs. Person
• Person vs. Nature
• Person vs. Self
• Man vs. Society

Theme

• The theme is the central idea or belief in a
  short story.
• This is a UNIVERSAL idea, as in, something that
  can be found in every culture, country, etc.
• Love, discrimination, poverty, pressure, etc.

Character

• A character is a person, or sometimes even an
  animal, who takes part in the action of a short
  story or other literary work (we will look more
  at character later this week as well).

Setting

• The setting of a short story is the time and
  place in which it happens. Authors often use
  descriptions of landscape, scenery, buildings,
  seasons or weather to provide a strong sense of
  setting.
