WHAT ARE PHRASAL VERBS?
  • A phrasal verb is a verb plus a preposition or
    adverb which creates a meaning different from the
    original verb.
  • Example GIVE original verb
  • GIVE UP phrasal verb
  • verb preposition
  • GIVE UP Stop using or doing something.

  • The word (particle) that follows the verb changes
    the meaning of the phrasal verb.
  • GIVE UP Stop using or doing something.
  • GIVE BACK Return something
  • GIVE IN Admit defeat

TYPES OF PHRASAL VERBS
  • Phrasal verbs can be divided into
  • TRANSITIVE SEPARABLE

  • NONSEPARABLE
  • THESE VERBS TAKE AN OBJECT.
  • INTRANSITIVE
  • THESE VERBS DO NOT TAKE AN OBJECT.

SEPARABLE PHRASAL VERBS
  • ARE TRANSITIVE, THEY ARE FOLLOWED BY AN OBJECT.
  • THE PARTICLE CAN BE SEPARATED FROM THE VERB SO
  • THAT A NOUN OR PRONOUN CAN BE INSERTED.
  • WHEN THE OBJECT IS A NOUN WE CAN PUT IT BEFORE
  • OR AFTER THE PARTICLE.

  • DIRECT OBJECT
  • EXAMPLE
  • I GAVE UP CHOCOLATE FOR A WEEK. (NOUN AFTER
    PARTICLE)
  • I GAVE CHOCOLATE UP FOR A WEEK. (NOUN BEFORE
    PARTICLE)
  • I GAVE IT UP FOR A WEEK. (PRONOUN CAN ONLY GO
    BETWEEN

  • VERB AND PARTICLE)
  • NOT I GAVE UP IT FOR A WEEK.

NONSEPARABLE PHRASAL VERBS
  • PARTICLES CANNOT BE SEPARATED FROM THE VERB.
  • WE ALWAYS PUT THE DIRECT OBJECT -NOUN OR
    PRONOUN- AFTER THE PARTICLE.

  • EXAMPLE
    DIRECT OBJECT
  • SHE TAKES AFTER HER GRANDMOTHER.
  • SHE TAKES HER GRANDMOTHER AFTER.

INTRANSITIVE PHRASAL VERBS
  • CANNOT TAKE A DIRECT OBJECT.
  • EXAMPLE
  • SIT DOWN AND ENJOY THE MOVIE.
  • SIT DOWN CANNOT TAKE AN OBJECT.

SEPARABLE PHRASAL VERBS
  • GIVE UP Stop doing something
  • HANG UP . Put up clothes on a hook
  • Stop a
    telephone conversation
  • PUT ON .. Dress
  • TURN OFF .. Stop a machine, light, etc.
  • TURN DOWN Decrease volume or
    intensity
  • TURN ON .. Start a machine, light, etc.
  • TURN UP .. Increase volume or intensity
  • TAKE OFF .. Remove clothing
  • THROW AWAY .. Get rid of
  • CLEAN UP .. Make clean and orderly

  • STAND UP .. Be upright
  • STAY UP .. Not go to bed at the normal time
