Why Build a New Facility?
  • For years, the existing Sun Tran facility has
    been over capacity. Designed for 150 buses,
    currently serving 200.
  • The PAG 2030 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP)
    calls for expansion of the Sun Tran bus fleet to
    400 buses.
  • In 2006, voters approved the Regional
    Transportation Authority (RTA) plan. Includes
    funding for a new facility to accommodate
    regional service expansion.

Existing BSMF
  • Built in 1977 within the Price Service Center at
    Park/Ajo.
  • Functions as bus storage and maintenance facility
    (BSMF), and Sun Tran administration.
  • A total of 550 employees use this site.
  • Serves a diverse fleet of 200 new and old buses.
    Most are alternate-fueled.

New BSMF Project History
  • In 1995, TDOT initiated the Facility Needs
    Assessment and Alternative Site Analysis.
    Completed 1997.
  • In 1996, TDOT initiated an FTA-required
    Environmental Assessment. Completed 1997.
  • Prince/Romero 26-acre site met most selection
    criteria. Land purchased in 1997.

BSMF Site Improvements
  • In 1999, TDOT completed a BSMF Site Development
    Master Plan.
  • In 2004, Sun Tran Blvd. and fueling facility for
    Sun Tran and City vehicles were completed.

Project Status
  • Currently finishing Design Development phase with
    GLHN consultants. All plans to be completed by
    November 2007.
  • Bid for construction in early 2008. Facility
    completion in mid 2009. RTA-funded express routes
    to begin service in 2009.
  • Will serve 150 buses in this phase. Next phase
    will serve 250 buses, plus a daycare center and
    new administration building.
  • Will accommodate alternative fuels and
    articulated buses.
  • Will be a highly efficient, integrated design US
    Green Builders Council LEED Silver Certified
    project.

Project Funding
  • City of Tucson has invested over 8 million to
    date 1994 Bond funds and FTA formula funds.
  • RTA providing 22 million towards 150-bus phase
    construction.
  • FTA awarded 4.95 million earmark in 2006. City
    currently applying for additional 10 million
    earmark to cover construction costs.
  • Total Project Cost for 150-bus phase is an
    estimated 32M. Costs may change by bid phase in
    early 2008.
