Step-by-Step Intervention Plan
Intervene immediately. Talk to the bully and talk
to the victim separately. Dont necessarily send
the pair to any Peer Mediation program. Check
written policies for your school on how to
proceed.

of conduct Sanctions Reassure the victim Inform
all parents as soon as possible Early parental
involvement may improve behavior more

For victims, get them involved in activities in
which they can improve their social skills and
confidence. For bullies, re-education is needed
as are sanctions such as removal of privileges,
detention, etc. Follow up with parents, teachers,
admin Monitor the behavior of the bully safety

victim If the bullys behavior continues to be a
threat to the wellbeing of other students, he
should be the one removed from the class or
school not the victim.

Useful questions to ask bullies What did you
do? Why was that a bad thing to do? Who did you
hurt? What were you trying to accomplish? Next
time you have that goal, how will you meet it
without hurting anybody?

  • Change their actions to stay out of trouble
  • Find other ways to get their needs met
  • Develop guilt ("I hurt someone")
  • Learn to trust and delay gratification
