What is a koala?

• Koalas are not bears.
• The Koala is a small marsupial that lives in
  eucalyptus (gum) trees in Australia.
• These nocturnal animals spend 18 to 20 hours each
  day resting and sleeping.

What do koalas eat?

• Koalas eat eucalyptus (gum tree) leaves. Koalas
  have a keen sense of smell which they use to make
  sure the gum leaves are edible and not poisonous.
  They store food in cheek pouches.

What do koalas look like?

• The koala is up to 2-3 feet long, weighing 10-30
  pounds. The soft, woolly fur is light-gray to
  brown, and has patches of white on the chest,
  neck. and ears. Baby koalas live in their
  mothers pouch for months.
