  • The sacrifices they made affected them for the
    rest of their life.

  • b. kids didnt go to college and ended up working
    in demoralizing jobs
  • C. Bc they had to save constantly, they carried
    that stigma for the rest of their lives part of
    their their personality.

Boulder Dam
  • 1. One project Hoover did approve that helped was
    the Boulder Dam. (Now called Hoover Dam)
  • 2. Highest dam in the world.
  • Provides water and power to cities like Los
    Angeles and Las Vegas.

Unpopularity is growing..
  • Democrats won more congressional seats.
  • By 1930, people were calling shantytown's
    Hooverviles.
  • Homeless called the newspapers they wrapped
    themselves in Hoover blankets
  • Hoover refused to budge on his policies. there
    was a growing hatred toward him in America.

The Bonus Army
  • In 1932, another incident made Hoover look even
    worse.
  • Walt Waters, a WWI vet led this Bonus Army to
    march on the capital to support a bill under
    debate.
  • The Patman Bill told the govt. to pay a bonus to
    WWU vets who had not been compensated.
  • It was to be in the form of case and a life
    insurance policy in 1945.

  • But Congressman Wright Patman said it should be
    paid immediately and NOT until 1945. (500.00 per
    soldier)
  • Hoover thought the Bonus Marchers were communist
    and convicts.
  • The Senate voted down the bill.
  • Hoover decides to disband the bonus army
  • Called in a force of 1,000 soldiers to gas over
    1500 people including an 11 month year old baby
    and an 8 year old boy.
  • When Franklin Delano Roosevelt heard of this, he
    knew this event would elect him
