Title: Jumping Frogs

1
Jumping Frogs
  • Exploring Potential and Kinetic Energy

2
Why do frogs jump?
  • Frogs don't have sharp teeth or claws to defend
themselves against predators, the best thing they
can do to avoid being eaten is to escape as
quickly as possible when they spot a
    hungry-looking animal approaching them.
  • Some kinds of frogs can jump distances up to 20
times their own body length in a single leap.
  • When disturbed, frogs often jump into a puddle or
pond where they can hide underwater.
  • Their erratic zig-zag jumping on land also serves
    to confuse potential predators.

3
Potential Kinetic Energy
  • Potential energy is energy stored
  • Kinetic energy is energy in motion
  • Before the yo-yo begins its fall it has stored
    energy due to its position.
  • As it starts to fall the potential energy begins
to be changed into kinetic energy.
  • At the top it has its maximum potential energy.
  • At the bottom its potential energy has been
converted into kinetic energy so that it now has
    its maximum kinetic energy.

  • Decorate and name your frog.
  • Practice jumping your frog.

7
Answer these questions on a sheet of notebook
paper
  • Where does the energy come from that allows your
    frog to move?
  • Can the amount of energy your frog has be changed
to make it jump different heights and distances?
  • When does your frog have potential energy?
  • When does your frog have kinetic energy?
  • When does your frog have the most energy?
  • When does your frog have the least energy?
  • YES, YOU HAVE TO USE COMPLETE SENTENCES!
