Title: A Plumb Line and A Crooked Wall

1
A Plumb Line and A Crooked Wall
  • All scripture is given by inspiration of God,
and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
    correction, for instruction in righteousness.
  • 2 Timothy 316

2
The Facts, Please!
  • A plumb line is a cord with a lead weight, or
plumb, on one end. It is used to determine
vertical direction. Because of the earths
gravity, the plumb will hold the cord straight
and perpendicular to the earth. The plumb,
sometimes called the plumb bob, is egg- or
pear-shaped and comes to a point. When held
along the brick wall, a plumb line will show
whether the wall is crooked or straight.

More Facts, Please!
  • Plumb lines have been in use at least as far back
as the early work of masons in Egypt. King Menes
of Egypt is known to have used them in about 2900
B.C. They are mentioned in the Bible in several
    Old Testament Scriptures.

4
More Facts, Please!
  • Even today, masons constantly use a plumb line to
determine if they are building a wall straight
and true. This device is also used to determine
if an old wall is still straight.

5
More Facts, Please!
  • When King Solomon died, the nation of Israel was
divided into two parts-the northern kingdom
(Israel) and the southern kingdom (Judah). Our
last story told how Judah was captured by the
Babylonians because of idol worship. But even
before that, the northern kingdom of Israel had
turned from God to idols. So God sent a preacher
to tell them that he as measuring them with a
plumb line. Why did he say that? They were not
a brick wall. God meant that he was checking
them out to see if they were staying true to him.
