7
Influenza Pandemic What is it?
8
Understanding Pandemic
  • Epidemic serious outbreak in a single community,
    population or region
  • Pandemic epidemic spreading around the world
affecting hundreds of thousands of people, across
    many countries and continents.

9
What is Influenza PANDEMIC
  • Virus outbreak that occurs in multiple geographic
    areas.
  • Simultaneously with virtually explosive
capability to infect across national borders and
    continents.
  • A GLOBAL epidemic

10
Pandemic 3 Conditions
  • A new influenza virus subtype emerges
  • It infects humans causing serious illness
  • It spreads easily and sustainably among humans
  • Avian Influenza A (H5N1) virus meets first 2
    conditions

11
Pandemic Waves
  • 3 month warning from first pandemic outbreak to
    local outbreaks
  • 1st wave - often out-of-season, may last 6-8
    weeks (peak at 3-4 weeks)
  • 2nd wave - 3-9 months later may be more
    severe
  • 3rd wave may also occur

12
How is Influenza Spread?
  • Can spread rapidly between people
  • Talking,Coughing or Sneezing
  • Transmitted through
  • Breathing droplets containing the virus
  • Touching infected persons or contaminated surface
  • Certain strains more severe than others
  • Highly Infectious

13
Recurring Events
  • Pandemics are rare, RECURRING
  • 3 Pandemics in previous century
  • Unpredictable - not always in winter
  • Great variations in
  • Mortality
  • Severity of illness
  • Illness pattern / age

Current Alert Phase
INTER-PANDEMIC PHASE Low risk of human cases 1
New virus in animals, no human cases Higher risk of human cases 2
PANDEMIC ALERT No or very limited human to human transmission 3
New virus causes human cases Evidence of increased human to human transmission 4
Evidence of significant human to human transmission 5
PANDEMIC Efficient and sustained human to human transmission 6
