  • This pattern is determined by the number and
    types of stresses in each line.

RHYTHM
  • PATTERN OF BEATS OR STRESSES IN SPOKEN OR WRITTEN
    LANGUAGE
  • Some poems have a very specific pattern or
    meter, whereas prose and free verse use the
    natural rhythms of everyday speech.

VILLANELLE
  • A LYRIC POEM WRITTEN IN THREE-LINE STANZAS,
    ENDING WITH A FOUR-LINE STANZA. IT HAS TWO
    REFRAIN LINES (repeated) THAT APPEAR INITIALLY IN
    THE FIRST AND THIRD LINES OF THE FIRST STANZA
    THEN APPEAR ALTERNATELY AS THE THIRD LINE OF
    SUBSEQUENT STANZAS, AND FINALLY AS THE LAST TWO
