• A POEMS RHYTHMICAL PATTERN.
• This pattern is determined by the number and
  types of stresses in each line.

• Whole lines or stanzas repeated at regular
  intervals

RHYTHM

• PATTERN OF BEATS OR STRESSES IN SPOKEN OR WRITTEN
  LANGUAGE
• Some poems have a very specific pattern or
  meter, whereas prose and free verse use the
  natural rhythms of everyday speech.

RHYME

• THE REPETITION OF SOUNDS AT THE ENDS OF WORDS

Ballad

• A song or song-like poem that tells a story
• A folk Ballad, such as Bonny Barbara Allen,
  has been passed down orally from generation to
  generation, often tells tales of domestic
  violence that ends tragically.

LYRIC POETRY

• A short poem that expresses strong feelings.
• LYRIC POEMS HAVE A MUSICAL QUALITY ACHIEVED
  THROUGH RHYTHM AND SUCH OTHER DEVICES AS
  ALLITERATION AND RHYME.

FREE VERSE

• POETRY THAT IS FREE OF RULES CONCERNING
  RHYTHMICAL PATTERN OR METER

VILLANELLE

• A LYRIC POEM WRITTEN IN THREE-LINE STANZAS,
  ENDING WITH A FOUR-LINE STANZA. IT HAS TWO
  REFRAIN LINES (repeated) THAT APPEAR INITIALLY IN
  THE FIRST AND THIRD LINES OF THE FIRST STANZA
  THEN APPEAR ALTERNATELY AS THE THIRD LINE OF
  SUBSEQUENT STANZAS, AND FINALLY AS THE LAST TWO
  LINES OF THE POEM. (Do not Go Gently)

SONNET

• A FOURTEEN-LINE LYRIC POEM, USUALLY WRITTEN IN
  RHYMED IAMBIC PENTAMETER.
• THE ENGLISH OR SHAKESPERIAN SONNET CONSISTS OF
  THREE QUATRAINS (FOUR-LINE STANZAS) AND A COUPLET
  (TWO LINE STANZA), USUALLY RHYMING ABAB CDCD EFEF

HAIKU

• JAPANESE POETRY COMPRISED OF THREE LINES. The
  first and third lines have five syllables. The
  second line has seven syllables.
• HAIKU SEEKS TO CONVEY A SINGLE VIVID EMOTION
  (like a snapshot)

TANKA

• CONSISTS OF FIVE UNRHYMED LINES WITH A PATTERN OF
  FIVE, SEVEN, FIVE, SEVEN, SEVEN SYLLABLES.

• A verse that presents the speech of one or more
  characters. It usually involves many narrative
  elements such as setting, conflict, and plot.
