  • Stories/Storytelling

Selecting Books for Children

  • Only a few new words should be introduced in a
    story
  • Attention Span 3-yr-olds 6-10 mins.,
  • 4-yr-olds8-12 mins.

Reading Stories to Children
  • Read ahead of time
  • Comfortable environment
  • Small groups
  • Help children settle down for story time
  • Introduce with ?s, comments, and predictions
  • Props grab attention
  • Use normal voice, but add sound effects, pauses,
    and new voices for interest
  • Answer ?s as they arise
  • Make the ending apparent

    w/dividers
  • Keep favorites, but rotate others for variety
  • Address issues children are facing (divorce,
    illness, death, etc.)
  • Books lie flat
