Title: The Moon

The Moon
  • Content Credit To
  • After School Astronomy Clubs
  • Dorian Janney
  • Tanglewood Nature Center
  • Jonathan Hodge

  • It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty
and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and
shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet
Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very,
    very small.
  • Neil Armstrong

What do you think?
  • How far away is the moon?
  • The moon is at an average distance of 238,855
    miles
  • (Did you know theres an app for that?!!)
  • How big is it?
  • The Moon is approximately 27 the size of the
    Earth
  • You would need 81 objects with the mass of the
Moon to match the mass of the Earth!
  • The surface area of the Moon is 37.9 million
    square kilometers
  • The continent of Asia is 44.4 million square km

4
What do you think?
  • How long did it take astronauts to travel there?
  • It took three days to get to the Moon
  • How long would it take you to drive there?
  • Travelling at 65mph, it would take about 153
days, 2 hours and 34 minutes to drive to the Moon
    (without traffic!!)

5
Astronauts on the Moon
  • From 1969 through 1972, six pairs of astronauts
    landed on the Moon

6
Fun Fact!
  • The Apollo 11 spacecraft was equipped for its
mission to the Moon with a state-of-the-art
on-board computer. The CPU ran at a pace of 1
Megahertz, and the system memory was 36K in size.
  • Currently, the typical home computer is equipped
with a CPU running at least 800 MHz and many
hand-held calculators contain more than 36K
    memory.

7
Why could this footprint be on the Moon for about
10 million years?
8
The Moons Movement
  • How does the Moon move?
  • The Moon orbits the Earth, and rotates on its
axis and is kept in its orbit by the Earths
    gravity
  • How long does it take the Moon to orbit around
    the Earth?
  • The Moon orbits the Earth in a little under 28
Earth days. It travels at almost 2,290 miles per
    hour

The Moons Movement
  • How long does it take the Moon to rotate one
    time?
  • The Moon's rotation period is also a little under
    28 days
  • the same face points toward the earth during its
    entire orbit

11
The Moons Surface
  • What do you see on the Moons surface?
  • Mountains and Valleys? Which is which?

12
The Moons Surface
  • How do the surface of the Earth and the Moon
    compare?
  • Why arent there any oceans on the moon?

13
Waxing and Waning
14
How was the Moon formed?
  • The moon was probably once a piece of the Earth
that came off when an asteroid (as big as Mars!)
hit the Earth about 3.5 to 4.5 billion years ago.
