What is African tribal slavery?
  • African tribes often went to war with each other.
    The members of the losing tribe would become
    slaves to the members of the winning tribe.

When did tribal slavery occur?
  • Prior to the 14th century
  • After the 14th century, tribal slaves were
    typically shipped out of Africa

Why tribal slavery?
  • Tribes that lost wars were seen as inferior and,
    therefore, could be used as slaves.
  • Human labor was traded for other items.

What were some jobs of tribal slaves?
  • Odd jobs
  • Cleaning up huts
  • Serve the king
  • Worked in diamond, gold, and mineral mines

Why did tribes use slaves?
  • Provide additional labor
  • Trade slaves for other needed items
  • Eventually sold tribal slaves to Europeans for
    money

What was slavery in America?
Blacks were taken from Africa to America where
they were made to do hard labor with no pay.

When did slavery in America occur?
  • The first slaves arrived in America in 1619.
  • Transportation of slaves ended in the 1800s.

Why black slaves?
  • African slaves were
  • strong
  • immune from colonists diseases
  • used to working in groups
  • Family-oriented
  • very obedient (due to cultural barriers)
  • able cultivate land (done previously in Africa)

What were some of the jobs of slaves in America?
  • Planted and harvested crops
  • House slaves (cooked, cleaned, served master)
  • Skilled jobs like a blacksmith
  • Child care

WHY did Americans use slaves?
  • To help build the newly found America
  • To develop and cultivate the land that was in
    America
  • To help high maintenance crops be profitable

What happened to American slavery?
  • Slavery ended in 1860 with the signing of the
    Emancipation Proclamation.
  • This freed all slaves in the rebelling states.
  • By 1865, after the Civil War, all slaves were
    declared free.

    characteristics of African tribal and American
    slavery.
