The Seven Deadly Sins
  • The medieval period and the early Renaissance
    period inherited a Christian model of sin.
  • There are over a dozen Christian models that
    exist but this is the most popular.

The Seven Deadly Sins continued
  • This is the most popular lists which includes 7
    sins and groups them into 3 Spiritual sins and
    4 Corporal or (bodily) sins.
  • All 7 of the sins were deadly evils.

  • Meaning that All sins would cause eternal
    damnation of the soul.
  • The spiritual sins were generally acknowledged as
    being more dangerous that sins involving the body.

  • Pride (having self-respect or arrogant)
    (Self-pleasure)
  • Envy (covet the object of such feeling)
  • Wrath (forceful, with anger)

  • PRIDE is considered the root of ALL evil. It is
    for PRIDE that Lucifer (Gods Highest Angel) fell
    from the Heavens and descended to the
    underground.
  • PRIDE is generally seen as a LION.

LEVIATHAN - ENVY
  • The LEVIATHAN is the great serpent demon of Hell
    and the ruler of the Oceans.
  • (Think of a cross between a DRAGON and Godzilla
    living in the ocean.)

SATAN WRATH or ANGER
  • Satan is the supreme Lord of Hell and all its
    demons.

  • Four Corporal Sins (caused against the body)
  • Accidia or Sloth (Laziness)
  • Avarice/Cupiditas or Greed (to possess more than
    one needs or deserves)
  • Gluttony (excessive eating or drinking)
  • Lust (intense sexual craving)

  • This sin is considered one of the flesh. It is
    represented by scenes of falling asleep on the
    job.
  • It is best related to the donkey as being lazy
    and slow-moving.

MAMMON AVARICE/GREED
  • AVARICE is the sin that creates THIEVES and
    MURDERERS.
  • This sin indulges in greed and wealth.
  • He with the most toys WINS!!!

BEELZEBUB - GLUTTONY
  • Satans second in command and is known as The
    Lord of The Flies
  • As a sin, he rules over ALL excessive eating and
    drinking.

ASMODEUS - LUST
  • Lust is carried up from hell on a goat.
  • Considered the sin of flesh and is said to be
    uncleanliness.

  • They are defined as being cures or remedies
    to the Seven Deadly Sins.
  • They are placed in 2 groups Three Spiritual

  • The medieval church assembled a list of seven
    good works that would ALSO serve as cures to
    the deadly sins.
  • Giving shelter to strangers, feeding the hungry,
    giving drink to those thirsting, clothing the
    naked, visiting the sick, ministering to the
    imprisoned, and burying the dead.
