How can we use the Haddon Matrix for injury
prevention and control?

• We can think of injury prevention as
• -primary prevention
• -secondary prevention
• -tertiary prevention
• Effective injury prevention strategies can focus
  on one or all levels of prevention

What is primary prevention?

• Primary prevention works in the pre-event phase
  to prevent the injury from occurring in the first
  place
• Things such as speed limits, traffic control, and
  playground design are important examples of
  primary prevention

What is secondary prevention?

• Secondary prevention works in the event phase to
  reduce the impact of injury given that the event
  has occurred.
• Seat belts, air bags, bicycle helmets are all
  examples of secondary prevention

What is tertiary prevention?

• Tertiary prevention works in the post-event stage
  to reduce the burden and impact of injury given
  that the event has occurred
• Trauma systems, specialized care, and EMS are
  examples of tertiary prevention

• Ideally injury prevention examines all phases of
  prevention and the social context in which they
  work most effectively
• There are social, cultural, financial and other
  barriers that can make impede injury prevention
  efforts
