• An ill-educated traveling tinker (mender of pots,
  pans, utensils)
• Self-educated by reading the Bible and 2 other
  religious tracts (pamphlets)
• Left home at 16 to join the parliamentary army
• Became an unlicensed and nonconformist minister
  after several years of intense spiritual struggles

• Arrested when he refused to renounce his faith-
  spent 12 years in prison
• Continued to minister in a barn that served as
  his church after his release
• Imprisoned again wrote 1st half of Pilgrims
  Progress finished it several years later

Plot

• Christian and Faithful must pass through Vanity
  in order to reach Celestial City. They encounter
  the citizens of the town and are tempted and
  harassed to purchase the goods the fair has to
  offer. The two travelers are then arrested,
  interrogated, and beaten when they reply
