Types of Japanese Dresses
  • The Kimono
  • A silk dress.
  • The sleeves go to the wrist and the dress goes to
    the ankles.
  • Has an obi (sash) holding up the dress.
  • Hakoma
  • A pleated skirt.
  • Now worn by men and women.
  • Used to only be worn by woman.
  • Uwangi
  • Consists of a jacket like the Kimono worn with a
    Hakoma

  • Worn with a light silk and heavy overdreesses
  • Red or orange, with gold
  • Also includes cranes and flowers
  • Men pick out the dress
  • Obi or sash
  • Cotton or silk
  • Mostly worn with Kimonos

  • Tabi
  • Ankle high socks and have separation
  • between each toe.
  • Geta
  • Present day flip flops.
  • With wooden waves at the bottom.

  • Handfans
  • Used many centuries ago.
  • Early handfans were made out of feathers, silk,
    and ivory.

  • Green spring
  • Red - summer
  • White fall
  • Black - winter

Mens Clothing
  • Men wear Kimonos too. Over the Kimonos
  • they wear a Hakoma. The Hakoma
  • used to be used for the warriors
  • legs when he was ridding a horse.
  • The shoes he wore were Geta sandles.
  • Geta sandels look like sandels but with pieces
  • of wood under the shoe.

Men's and Children's Clothing
  • They are named Geta sandels because of the clik
    clak sound. The small children wear a hanten. A
    hanten is like a small Kimono for children.

  • They wear mostly cotton because it keeps
  • them warm in cold weather.
  • Men and women both wear kimonos.
  • Kimonos dont have pockets.
  • In the summer Kimonos are only
  • up to your elbows because of the heat.
