What is TESA?
  • TESA is a teacher training program that takes
place over six three hour sessions after school.
  • Teachers learn 3 new interactions each session,
(total of 15 interactions). These interactions
    fall within three categories response
    opportunity, feedback and personal regard.
  • Teachers observe each other practicing these
interactions in their classrooms between sessions.

  • TESA is based on the belief that the surest way
to create change is to change ourselves.
  • TESA is structured to increase teacher awareness
of their perceptions and how their perceptions
affect their expectations of both perceived high
    and low achieving students.
  • TESA is concerned not just with the quantity of
interactions, but also the quality of
    interactions.

What is the history of TESA?
  • TESA was developed in 1970 under an Elementary
and Secondary Education Title III grant to the
Los Angeles County Office of Education.
  • TESA was conceived by Mary Martin, who directed
the project during the first two years while the
teacher training program was developed and
    tested.
  • TESA is based on the work of Good Brophy.
  • Sam Kerman directed TESA during the dissemination
    phase, designed the facilitator training
component, and spread awareness of TESA
    throughout the country.

TESA and the ICSD
  • The ICSD started training teachers in TESA in the
    mid 1980s.
  • Participation in TESA has been an expectation for
all second year teachers in our district.
  • TESA is the longest, continuous staff development
    program in the ICSD.
