DEFINITION Hebrew
  • qahal, an assembly, gathering, used as noun
123x translated by ekklesia in LXX
  • In 36 instances, translated by sunagoge
  • Verb used 39x
  • Used to refer to groups in general, such as those
gathered for military purposes, judicial purposes
  • eda, assembly, congregation, multitude
    practically synonymous with qahal

17
DEFINITION Greek

18
DEFINITION Greek
  • In a local sense nearly 40 times e.g., Acts 511
  • In a generic sense, i.e., of an institution
    Matt. 1817 I Cor. 1228 I Tim. 315 James
    514
  • In a collective sense, i.e., an organized mass of
believers (perhaps what later theologians refer
to as the Visible Church) Acts 83 I Cor. 159
    Gal. 113 Phil. 36
  • To the Church extended abroad, Acts 931
  • Church is used in the broadest sense all
believers (perhaps what later theologians refer
to as the Invisible Church) Eph. 122 Col. 118

19

  • An unruly mob gathering, Acts 1932,39,41
  • To refer to kingly gathering for liturgical
    praise, Hebrews 212
  • Some difficult usages
  • Matt. 1618, the Church Militant
  • Acts 2028, the assembly in Ephesus

20
DEFINITION
  • Three basic meanings
  • Local gathering of believers, The Visible Church
  • Collective number of professing Christians, The
    Visible Church
  • Sum total of all believers, The Invisible Church

21
DEFINITION Other Words
  • circe, Saxon
  • kirk, Scottish

  • All of these are most likely derived from
kuriakos, of the Lord, the Lords

22
DEFINITION Confessional
  • L.C. 62, The visible church is a society made
up of all such as in all ages and places of the
world do profess the true religion and of their
    children. WCF, 252
  • L.C. 64, The invisible church is the whole
number of the elect, that have been, are, or
shall be gathered into one under Christ the
    head. WCF, 251

23
THE CHURCH FROM BELOW
  • The Church is a natural community
  • It fulfills many socialization needs
  • There is recognizable fellowship in the Church
  • There is a sense of community which is
foundational (not a luxury, but a necessity)

24
THE CHURCH FROM BELOW
  • The Church is a political community
  • There are socially ordered relationships and
    patterns of authority and decision-making
  • It is not a question of whether politics will
exist in the Church rather, it is only a
question of the quality of the politics
  • Ol Boy networks often are alive and well. This
is not entirely negative, but can have some
    negative considerations
  • There are positive considerations as well

25
THE CHURCH FROM BELOW
  • A community of common language meanings,
priorities, and values. This becomes conventional
    for the In-Group
  • A community of Interpretation
  • Common meanings
  • The difficulty of translation
  • A community of memory and understanding
  • Characterized by an inner continuity and empathy
among persons who have understood and relived the
same events. It has a shared story.

26
THE CHURCH FROM BELOW
  • The Church is a community of action and belief
it espouses a mission or a purpose which can be
expressed in many forms of action
  • Evangelism
  • Education
  • Edification
  • Worship

27
THE CHURCH FROM BELOW
  • A sociological description of church the church
is a body of persons who share some measure of
common life, values, meaning, and loyalty. It has
an historical continuity, identifiable by certain
beliefs, ways of work, rites, outlooks, and
feelings. It may be more But it is at least the
    above.

28
THE CHURCH IN THE WORLD
  • The First Church Orthodox Churches, the Roman
Catholic Church Protestant churches in Eastern
Europe, Greece, Middle East, Ethiopia, South
    India
  • The culture tolerates Christianity at best in
    some instances, governments are openly
    antagonistic
  • There is a certain reliance on the spiritual
legacy of what has gone before. In some
    instances, this substitutes for vital
    Christianity
  • There are examples (e.g., Poland, Russia) of a
    renewal of traditional Christian churches.

29
1. Salvation through faith in Christ eternal
life
30
Matthew 1615-18
31
(15) He said to them, "But who do you say that
I am?"
32
(16) Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ,
the Son of the living God."
33
(17) And Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you,
Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not
reveal this to you, but My Father who is in
heaven.
34
(18) "I also say to you that you are Peter, and
upon this rock I will build My church and the
gates of Hades will not overpower it.
  • You are the Christ, Son of the Living God John
    316

35
2. The anointing The Baptism of the Holy
SpiritActs 14
36
(4) Gathering them together, He commanded them
not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the
Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you heard
of from Me
37
Acts 18
38

Spirit has come upon you and you shall be My
witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and
Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the
earth."

1 Corinthians 124-20
42
(4) Now there are varieties of gifts, but the
same Spirit.
43
(5) And there are varieties of ministries, and
the same Lord.
44
(6) There are varieties of effects, but the same
God who works all things in all persons.
45
(7) But to each one is given the manifestation
of the Spirit for the common good.
46
(8) For to one is given the word of wisdom
through the Spirit, and to another the word of
knowledge according to the same Spirit
47
(9) to another faith by the same Spirit, and to
another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
48
(10) and to another the effecting of miracles,
and to another prophecy, and to another the
distinguishing of spirits, to another various
kinds of tongues, and to another the
interpretation of tongues.
49
(11) But one and the same Spirit works all these
things, distributing to each one individually
just as He wills.

(11) And He gave some as apostles, and some as
prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as
pastors and teachers,
110
(12) for the equipping of the saints for the
work of service, to the building up of the body
of Christ
111
(13) until we all attain to the unity of the
faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to
a mature man, to the measure of the stature which
belongs to the fullness of Christ.
112
(14) As a result, we are no longer to be
children, tossed here and there by waves and
carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the
trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful

Rom 74 Therefore, my brethren, you also were
made to die to the Law through the body of
Christ, so that you might be joined to another,
to Him who was raised from the dead, in order
that we might bear fruit for God.
123
Romans 121-5
124
(1) Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the
mercies of God, to present your bodies a living
and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is
your spiritual service of worship.
125
(2) And do not be conformed to this world, but
be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so
that you may prove what the will of God is, that
which is good and acceptable and perfect.
126
(3) For through the grace given to me I say to
everyone among you not to think more highly of
himself than he ought to think but to think so
as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to
each a measure of faith.
127
(4) For just as we have many members in one body
and all the members do not have the same function,
128
(5) so we, who are many, are one body in Christ,
and individually members one of another.

137
(12) For even as the body is one and yet has
many members, and all the members of the body,
though they are many, are one body, so also is
Christ.
138
(13) For by one Spirit we were all baptized into
one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves
or free, and we were all made to drink of one
Spirit.
139
(14) For the body is not one member, but many.
140
(15) If the foot says, "Because I am not a hand,
I am not a part of the body," it is not for this
reason any the less a part of the body.
141
(16) And if the ear says, "Because I am not an
eye, I am not a part of the body," it is not for
this reason any the less a part of the body.
142
(17) If the whole body were an eye, where would
the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where
would the sense of smell be?
143
(18) But now God has placed the members, each
one of them, in the body, just as He desired.
144
(19) If they were all one member, where would
the body be?
145
(20) But now there are many members, but one
body.

is, when the true worshipers will worship the
Father in spirit and truth for such people the
Father seeks to be His worshipers.(24) "God is
spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in
spirit and truth."

Heb 1315 Through Him then, let us continually
offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is,
the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.
263
We have made a commitment to look like the Bride
of Christ. To be a Biblical Church. It is all
about Truth knowing God and making Him
known.Jud 13 Beloved, while I was making every
effort to write you about our common salvation, I
felt the necessity to write to you appealing that
you contend earnestly for the faith which was
once for all handed down to the saints.
264
John 423,24BUT THE HOUR IS COMING, AND NOW IS,
WHEN TRUE WORSHIPERS WILL WORSHIP THE FATHER IN
SPIRIT AND TRUTH FOR THE FATHER IS SEEKING SUCH
TO WORSHIP HIM. GOD IS A SPIRIT AND THEY THAT
WORSHIP HIM MUST WORSHIP HIM IN SPIRIT AND IN
TRUTH. AND YOU SHALL KNOW THE TRUTH, AND THE
TRUTH SHALL MAKE YOU FREE. John 832
265
1 Timothy 41-6(1) But the Spirit explicitly
says that in later times some will fall away from
the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits
and doctrines of demons,(2) by means of the
hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience
as with a branding iron,(3) men who forbid
marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which
God has created to be gratefully shared in by
those who believe and know the truth.(4) For
everything created by God is good, and nothing is
to be rejected if it is received with
gratitude(5) for it is sanctified by means of
the word of God and prayer.(6) In pointing out
these things to the brethren, you will be a good
servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on
the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine
which you have been following.
266
The Church is not a place to be entertained it
is a school, a hospital, a place to get equipped,
healed, and energized to live for Christ!
267
W. Tozer said"Christ calls men to carry a
cross we call them to have fun in His name....
He calls them to holiness we call them to a
cheap and tawdry happiness that would have been
rejected with scorn by the least of the Stoic
philosophers... The contemporary moral climate
does not favor a faith as tough and fibrous as
that taught by our Lord and His apostles. The
delicate, brittle saints being produced in our
religious hothouses today are hardly to be
compared with the committed, expendable believers
who once gave their witness among men. And the
fault lies with our leaders. They are too timid
to tell the people all the truth. They are now
asking men to give to God that which costs them
nothing.
268
A.   Our churches are filled (or one-quarter
filled) with a soft breed of Christian that must
be fed on a diet of harmless fun to keep them
interested. About theology they know littleNo
wonder their moral and spiritual constitution is
so frail. Such can only be called weak adherents
of a faith they never really understood."A. W.

269
The Church will be a bride that is ready we
need to be a zealous people passionate about
God!
270
Titus 211-15 For the grace of God has appeared,
bringing salvation to all men, (12) instructing
us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to
live sensibly, righteously and godly in the
present age, (13) looking for the blessed hope
and the appearing of the glory of our great God
and Savior, Christ Jesus, (14) who gave Himself
for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and
to purify for Himself a people for His own
possession, zealous for good deeds. (15) These
things speak and exhort and reprove with all
authority. Let no one disregard you.
271
How are we made pure?Ephesians 526-27 so
that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her
by the washing of water with the word (The word
of God is more important than mans ideas about
the Word of God), (27) that He might present to
Himself the church in all her glory, having no
spot or wrinkle or any such thing but that she
would be holy and blameless. The Word is our sole
source of faith and practice not programs or
humanistic ideology!
272
Jam 122 But prove yourselves doers of the word,
and not merely hearers who delude themselves.
Church is where the Word is taught and God
is worshiped.
273
2 Timothy 42-5PREACH THE WORD! Be ready in
season and out of season. CONVINCE, REBUKE,
EXHORT, WITH ALL LONGSUFFERING AND TEACHING. For
the time will come when they will not endure
sound doctrine, but according to their own
desires, because they have itching ears, they
will heap up for themselves teachers and they
will turn their ears away from the truth, and be
turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in
all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an
evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
274
We need to avoid them! Now I beseech you,
brethren, mark (identify) them which cause
divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine
which ye have learned and avoid them. For they
that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ,
but their own belly and by good words and fair
speeches deceive the hearts of the simple Romans
1617,18
275
So what are Christs commands to the Church?
276
1. First is of course, LOVEJoh 1334 "A new
commandment I give to you, that you love one
another, even as I have loved you, that you also
love one another.  What does this involve?
277
Colossians 312-17(12) So, as those who have
been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a
heart of compassion, kindness, humility,
gentleness and patience(13) bearing with one
another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a
complaint against anyone just as the Lord
forgave you, so also should you.(14) Beyond all
these things put on love, which is the perfect
bond of unity.(15) Let the peace of Christ rule
in your hearts, to which indeed you were called
in one body and be thankful.(16) Let the word
of Christ richly dwell within you, with all
wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with
psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing
with thankfulness in your hearts to God.(17)
Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the
name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him
to God the Father.
278
Mat 544 "But I say to you, love your enemies
and pray for those who persecute you,  Rom
1220 "BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM,
AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK FOR IN SO
DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD."
Joh 1335 "By this all men will know that you
are My disciples, if you have love for one
another."
279
(1 John 410-11).This is love not that we
loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son
as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear
friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to
love one another
280
Sometime love involves our second command,2.
Discipline - Many Churches are afraid to obey
this command!
281
Matthew 1815-17(15) "If your brother sins, go
and show him his fault in private if he listens
to you, you have won your brother.(16) "But if
he does not listen to you, take one or two more
with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE
WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED.(17) "If
he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the
church and if he refuses to listen even to the
church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax
collector.
282
(2 Thessalonians 313-15) But as for you,
brethren, do not grow weary of doing good.14)
If anyone does not obey our instruction in this
letter, take special note of that person and do
not associate with him, so that he will be put to
shame.15) Yet do not regard him as an enemy,
but admonish him as a brother. (2 Thessalonians
36) Now we command you, brethren, in the name
of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from
every brother who leads an unruly life and not
according to the tradition which you received
from us.
283
1Co 511 But actually, I wrote to you not to
associate with any so-called brother if he is an
immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a
reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler--not even
to eat with such a one.
284
3. Forgiveness this would solve a lot of
problems we experience Matthew 523-24(23)
"Therefore if you are presenting your offering at
the altar, and there remember that your brother
has something against you,(24) leave your
offering there before the altar and go first be
reconciled to your brother, and then come and
present your offering. Mar 1125 "Whenever you
stand praying, forgive, if you have anything
against anyone, so that your Father who is in
heaven will also forgive you your transgressions.

285
4. Worship and Prayer its not chants or
montras!Mat 67 "And when you are praying, do
not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles
do, for they suppose that they will be heard for
their many words.  Eph 618 With all prayer
and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and
with this in view, be on the alert with all
perseverance and petition for all the saints,
286
5. The Great CommissionMar 1615 And He said to
them, "Go into all the world and preach the
gospel to all creation.
287
Mat 513 "You are the salt of the earth but if
the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made
salty again? It is no longer good for anything,
except to be thrown out and trampled under foot
by men.  Matthew 514-16(14) "You are the
light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot
be hidden(15) nor does anyone light a lamp and
put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and
it gives light to all who are in the house.(16)
"Let your light shine before men in such a way
that they may see your good works, and glorify
your Father who is in heaven.
288
Mat 2414 "This gospel of the kingdom shall be
preached in the whole world as a testimony to all
the nations, and then the end will come.
(Galatians 67) Do not be deceived, God is
not mocked for whatever a man sows, this he will
also reap. (Galatians 69) Let us not lose
heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap
if we do not grow weary. (Hebrews 132) Do not
neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by
this some have entertained angels without knowing
it.
289
6. The Church should Encourage!Encouragement(1
Thessalonians 211-12).For you know that we
dealt with each of you as a father deals with his
own children, encouraging, comforting and urging
you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you
into his kingdom and glory
290
Ephesians 415-16(15) but speaking the truth in
love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him
who is the head, even Christ,(16) from whom the
whole body, being fitted and held together by
what every joint supplies, according to the
proper working of each individual part, causes
the growth of the body for the building up of
itself in love.
291
1Th 514 We urge you, brethren, admonish the
unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the
weak, be patient with everyone.   Look
aroundhow many here need encouraged? ALL OF
US!!!!
292
Ephesians 411-13(11) And He gave some as
apostles, and some as prophets, and some as
evangelists, and some as pastors and
teachers,(12) for the equipping of the saints
for the work of service, to the building up of
the body of Christ(13) until we all attain to
the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of
the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure
of the stature which belongs to the fullness of
Christ.
293
(1 Corinthians 110) Now I exhort you, brethren,
by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you
all agree and that there be no divisions among
you, but that you be made complete in the same
mind and in the same judgment.  (Philippians
24) do not merely look out for your own
personal interests, but also for the interests of
others.
294
7. Give ComfortAs a mother comforts her child,
so will I comfort you and you will be comforted
over Jerusalem (Isaiah 6613).
295
2 Corinthians 12-7(2) Grace to you and peace
from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
Christ.(3) Blessed be the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God
of all comfort,(4) who comforts us in all our
affliction so that we will be able to comfort
those who are in any affliction with the comfort
with which we ourselves are comforted by God.(5)
For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in
abundance, so also our comfort is abundant
through Christ.(6) But if we are afflicted, it
is for your comfort and salvation or if we are
comforted, it is for your comfort, which is
effective in the patient enduring of the same
sufferings which we also suffer(7) and our
hope for you is firmly grounded, knowing that as
you are sharers of our sufferings, so also you
are sharers of our comfort.
296
8. Commands about how we deal with The
World South Orange County 1 Timothy
617-19(17) Instruct those who are rich in this
present world not to be conceited or to fix their
hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God,
who richly supplies us with all things to
enjoy.(18) Instruct them to do good, to be rich
in good works, to be generous and ready to
share,(19) storing up for themselves the
treasure of a good foundation for the future, so
that they may take hold of that which is life
indeed.
297
Jews (Romans 1125-26) For I do not want you,
brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery--so
that you will not be wise in your own
estimation--that a partial hardening has happened
to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has
come inRomans 1126(26) and so all Israel
will be saved just as it is written, "THE
DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE
UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB."
298
Worldliness (Romans 122) And do not be
conformed to this world, but be transformed by
the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove
what the will of God is, that which is good and
acceptable and perfect
299
1 Corinthians 69-11(9) Or do you not know that
the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of
God? Do not be deceived neither fornicators, nor
idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor
homosexuals,(10) nor thieves, nor the covetous,
nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will
inherit the kingdom of God.(11) Such were some
of you but you were washed, but you were
sanctified, but you were justified in the name of
the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our
God.
300
(2 Corinthians 617) "Therefore, COME OUT FROM
THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE," says the Lord. "AND
DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN And I will welcome
you. 1Jo 215 Do not love the world nor the
things in the world. If anyone loves the world,
the love of the Father is not in him.
