Title: Available and Ongoing Clinical Trials for Parkinson

1
Available and Ongoing Clinical Trialsfor
Parkinsons Disease Patients
2
EARLY PD
  • Rasagiline may slow progression of PD
  • In a preliminary delayed start study those who
took rasagiline from the beginning did better
than those who started it after 6 months
  • Istradefylline may improve PD symptoms without
    causing dyskinesia

3
EARLY PD
  • STRIDE and FIRST STEP evaluate Stalevo vs.
    Sinemet with regard to
  • Does Stalevo improve PD more than Sinemet?
  • Does Stalevo cause less dyskinesia?
  • Does Stalevo lower homocysteine? Elevations of
homocysteine may cause strokes and be associated
    with dementia
  • CoQ10
  • May slow progression of disease
  • Stabilizes energy production in cells

4
MODERATE PD
  • Glutathione antioxidant
  • May improve symptoms
  • May slow progression
  • Eye Safety Study
  • Tests eyesight while taking Parkinson Disease
    medications

5
ADVANCED PD
  • Istradefylline for patients with fluctuations
  • Spheramine transplantation of retinal cells
  • These cells make levodopa and serve as levodopa
    pumps in the brain
  • for pts with moderate severe symptoms in the
    morning before taking medication
  • Sarizotan for dyskinesia

6
OTHER
  • Fatigue Study
  • Try to understand and treat potential causes of
    fatigue in PD
  • Psychosis Study
  • Evaluating the use of Melperone (an
antipsychotic) in PD patients with psychosis
  • SPECT scan studies
  • Develop a scan as a diagnostic tool to discern
    between Parkinsonian and non-Parkinsonian tremor
