3Current legislation
- European and national laws regulate exposure of
workers to both physical and chemical agents - It is the responsibility of the employer to
ensure that these laws are adhered to 13.7 MB
(14,367,744 bytes)
- To comply with legislation, in general employers
must - Design out risks where possible
- Inform workforce of health safety risks
- Assess the risks
- Provide an actionable solution
- Deliver training to employees
- Keep health and action records
- This applies to the four key areas of risk
4Health Safety Four Key Areas of Risk
Dust
Hand-arm Vibration

Working at Height
5Basics of Hand-Arm Vibration
Most handheld power tools transmit vibration to
the hands and arms. Over exposure to vibration
can result in Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome
(HAVS). Each year, HAV accounts for
approximately 3,000 new claims for Industrial
Injury Disability Benefit, the greatest number
being in the construction industry. This has led
to an incremental increase in insurance premiums.
Exposure Action Value (EAV 2.5 m/s2)
The level that can be worked to without any
health surveillance in place. A tool with a
vibration magnitude of 2.5m/s2 or below can be
used for an 8 hour day without any risk
Exposure Limit Value (ELV 5.0 m/s2)
The absolute maximum level allowed, below this,
but above EAV, additional controls such as health
surveillance must be in place
- All vibration monitoring systems offer
transparency to exposure to hand-arm vibration
with relation to EAV and ELV
6Reducing the Risk of HAVS Tool Handling
Drilling and Breaking
- Hold tool in a stance which allows good balance
- Hold tool below shoulder level where possible
- Restrict the contact pressure to a level where
the tool function most effectively - Always grip both handles and restrict grip force
just sufficient to hold tool securely
- Just because it doesnt shake, it doesnt mean
that it wont work - Let the tool do the work

8Reducing the Risk of HAVS Tool Handling
Cutting Grinding
- Always use low vibration side handle
- Ensure that you have been trained to use
grinders and you have a valid certificate
- Reciprocating Saw - an alternative method to
grinding - Clamp adaptor reduces vibration
9Reducing the Risk of HAVS Use the correct
consumables - drill bits designed for higher
speed
- Watch out for signs of wear and tear
10Reducing the Risk of HAVS Use the correct
consumables - chisels with longer life and
optimum performance
- Longer and consistent performance chisels

Dust
Hand-arm Vibration
Noise
Working at Height
35Reducing the Risk of Noise
- Loud noise can cause permanent damage to your
hearing. Once you loose your hearing, you will
never recover it - A European directive has been issued to protect
workers from exposure to excessive noise The
Physical Agents (Noise) Directive
36Reducing the Risk of Noise What do employers
need to do?
- Inform and train their workforce about
- Noise and the associated risk
- How they can protect themselves
- What measures the employer has taken
- Provide suitable protective equipment for their
employees use - Assess and manage the risk
- Define who has what risk level
- Provide health surveillance for their employees
where risks cannot be eliminated - Consider alternative methods and job rotation
- The risk assessment must be recorded by the
employer and kept up to date
37Reducing the Risk of Noise What should workers
do?
- Report any signs of hearing damage immediately to
their supervisor. Symptoms are - Difficulty following a conversation, also on the
phone - The family often complains that the TV is too
loud - Tinnitus (constant ringing, whistling or humming)
in the ears may also be a sign - Use the right kind of ear protection
- There is a wide variety of ear protection
available - Pick the one best suited to the applicable job
- Consider alternative methods
- Consider alternative methods of doing the job, e.
g. - Diamond drilling instead of chiselling
- Direct fastening instead of drilling

Professional Services
A fixed monthly charge covers all tool service
and repair costs. That greatly simplifies your
financial planning and makes tool fleet
administration easier. For your safety,
convenience and peace of mind, this incudes
- Loan tools in the event of a breakdown,
encouraging customers to return faulty or damaged
tools and avoid working with potentially unsafe
tools. - Tool Exchange At the end of the usage period each
tool is replaced with the latest generation
ensuring compliance with the latest safety
standards.
Each repair is completed to the highest possible
standard including a full safety check. This
guarantees consistent high tool performance, low
vibration values and the utmost of safety.
